Donald Trump thinks he knows why he likes generals. They're usually hard-charging leaders bent on victory whose exploits, if successful, become legendary.

Few encompass that better than Trump's pick for defense secretary, Jim Mattis, the former Marine four-star and commander of U.S. Central Command who earned a cult following among his troops that persists to this day. He is known as much for his rhetorical flair, earning the sobriquet "Mad Dog," as it he is for a thoughtful and historical view on the virtues of war.

Militarizing the Cabinet

Other generals who Trump has chosen – former Marine four-star John Kelly to become homeland security secretary, and former Army Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn for national security adviser – round out the triumvirate of military brass in the 45th president's Cabinet. Retired Army Gen. David Petraeus, who led U.S. military efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq and later ran the CIA, was considered for secretary of state.
