What they did buy into was the argument that this was a “binary choice.” No matter how bad Mr. Trump was, my listeners argued, he could not possibly be as bad as Mrs. Clinton. You simply cannot overstate this as a factor in the final outcome. As our politics have become more polarized, the essential loyalties shift from ideas, to parties, to tribes, to individuals. Nothing else ultimately matters.
That's what the Salem Network has pushed from day one. Pushing the "binary choice", hosts like Mark Davis and Mike Gallagher will be able to deflect criticisms of Trump by saying, "thank God we don't have Hillary as President." Judging by the ratings I've seen for DFW, such views will not hurt their ratings, because they have don't have any ratings. Ok, their last rating was a 0.9, in an area where 12 stations have a 3.0 or higher. WBAP, the station that dumped Davis four years ago, has a 4.1, probably because Rush and Mark Levin are still found on WBAP.
