Kanye, Trump huddle at Trump Tower and discuss 'life'

Kanye West met with President-elect Donald Trump briefly at Trump Tower on Tuesday for what Trump described as a casual chat between old friends.

“Just friends, just friends and he’s a good man,” Trump said as the pair stood before reporters. “We’ve been friends for a long time.”

When asked what they discussed, Trump responded: “We discussed life.”

West ignored questions, including about whether he would perform at the inauguration.

“I just want to take a picture right now,” he said.

The two embraced before West left.

“You take care of yourself, I’ll see you soon,” Trump could be heard saying.

West was recently hospitalized after abruptly canceling his Saint Pablo Tour. In one of his last concerts before calling off the tour, West said he had not voted, but that he would have supported Trump if he had.

West has previously discussed, perhaps jokingly, a run for president of his own in 2020.

“I don’t have views on politics, I just have a view on humanity,” West said when discussing the possibility.

Mental health

On November 20, 2016, shortly after saying at a concert that he would have voted for Donald Trump if he had voted, West appeared to have paranoid beliefs related to Jay Z, seeming to think that he had hired hitmen to kill West. Soon before abruptly ending a concert he said, “Jay Z—call me, bruh. You still ain’t called me. Jay Z, I know you got killers. Please don’t send them at my head. Please call me. Talk to me like a man.”[335] The following day, he was committed to the UCLA Medical Center with hallucinations and paranoia. Contrary to what early reports said, however, West was not actually taken to the hospital involuntarily; he was persuaded to do so by authorities.[336]

While the episode was first described as one of "temporary psychosis" caused by dehydration and sleep deprivation, West's mental state was abnormal enough for his 21 cancelled concerts to be covered by his insurance policy;[337] he has reportedly been paranoid and depressed throughout the hospitalization,[338] but remains formally undiagnosed.[339] Both the Paris robbery of his wife and the anniversary of his mother's death are thought to have been major contributors to his mental state,[340] with the former likely to have triggered the paranoia.[341]

On November 30, West was released from the hospital.[342]
