Pentagon should have a civilian chief to give peace a chance

The suspense over President-elect Trump’s choice for secretary of defense is over.  Retired Gen. James Mattis is probably a mystery man for most in the country, who care nothing for history and follow current events through sound bite podcasts and satirical TV shows.

But for those who have spent years attached to the national security establishment, Mattis is well known indeed as an honorable, hard-working individual who has, by repute, profound intellectual capacity, erudition to match it, and a thorough understanding of the world stage. He is a hard driver of subordinates, but expects nothing less from himself.  His dedication to his craft is emphasized by the fact he has never married, but instead earned the sobriquet of “Warrior Monk.”
