The GOP’s Future Is as the Party of Industry
« on: November 25, 2016, 02:26:55 pm »

 Republicans have a chance to reshape American politics by offering a program for an industrial economy.

Donald Trump won the presidency in an upset victory largely because of his appeal to the white working class in a number of industrial states that have been reliably Democratic for years. His denunciations of Chinese mercantilism and U.S. transnational corporations that offshore jobs to low-wage countries resonated strongly in the parts of the South and the Midwest where most U.S. manufacturing is concentrated — while shocking defenders of the bipartisan orthodoxy in favor of unrestricted globalization and mass immigration. Trump’s astonishing success shows the potential in American politics for a party of industry.

 Since the 1990s, the Republican and Democratic establishments alike have shared the view that the U.S. should shed “old” industries such as manufacturing to other countries, in order to specialize in “knowledge industries” such as software and social media that employ a college-educated “creative class.” The declining share of employment in the goods-producing economy, as a result of automation and offshoring, makes this view superficially plausible.

 I must confess I am fed up with dweebs like this author who have never escaped the ivory tower to go see how the real world works.

Who is HE to tell Americans how to live their lives via the tax and "industrial policy" legislation he wishes to enact, since he is evidently more brilliant than the rest of us. I have no idea what the future holds and neither does the author -- but I would not be so arrogant as to tell Americans that they cannot buy Mexican steel 20% cheaper than what they can buy in the US just so we can keep a lousy few thousand more union jobs in Pittsburgh (or Gary IN, say).

I do know that taxes, regulation, government spending to insane levels that crowds out private investment .....and a managed US dollar that has created all kinds of errant resource flows via false interest rates -- ALL of this is what killed prosperity in this country ....NOT immigrants and free trade.

Still, the basic idea is a good one but getting our own house in order and free trade are the way to do it!  NOT trying to micromanage everything from the White House!

Government officials setting industrial policy just means that business leaders will seek to influence them to maximize their corporate advantage at the expense of the country and of their rivals.

Just an example:

Trump is about the last person on the planet who should micromanage industry. His business is real estate and marketing which have about as much in common with industry as an elephant has with a unicycle. In Trump's business there is no resource management, there's little in the way of logistics or transportation, the labor costs are minimal at best and the whole tax structure is different.

The reasons manufacturing leaves America aren't  in those far away countries. The reasons are almost all right here in America and virtually all are a direct result of government interference.

What happened to free markets and the belief that government was the problem, not the answer?  Where's that GOP?

@RAT Patrol

It's been dying for the last several years but has been finally dealt its death blow with the nomination and election of Trump
I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them.

"industrial policy" = crony capitalism, and Atlas Shrugged = nonfiction.
