Monkey incident sparks fierce battle in Libya

Ethnic fighting has left at least 20 people dead in the south Libyan town of Sabha after an incident with a monkey, medical sources say.

The pet monkey assaulted a schoolgirl, leading the victim's family to seek revenge, and three young men were killed along with the animal initially.

Days of fighting followed between the Awlad Suleiman and Guedadfa groups.

Casualties may be greater as the death toll is reportedly for the Awlad Suleiman group only.

Reports suggest tanks, rockets, mortars and other heavy weapons were used in the fighting, in which at least 50 people were also wounded.

I note that the BBC version sanitizes it. 

The Reuters reporting (http://www.reuters.com/article/us-libya-security-sabha-idUSKBN13F0PD) states:

... incident in which a monkey that belonged to a shopkeeper from the Gaddadfa tribe attacked a group of schoolgirls who were passing by.

The monkey pulled off one of the girls' head scarf, leading men from the Awlad Suleiman tribe to retaliate by killing three people from the Gaddadfa tribe as well as the monkey, according to a resident who spoke to Reuters.

Can't mention it's about headscarves, can we, BBC?
