Democrats and "Flyover Country"
« on: November 20, 2016, 03:29:40 am »
Well, in the recent presidential election, Hillary Clinton won both the entire West Coast and the entire northeast, but very little else.  (She did manage to win Minnesota--albeit by a much smaller margin than Democratic candidates normally do--and Virginia; the latter, due to the tendencies of Northern Virginia, near DC, which has propelled the state into the Democratic ranks.)

And, of course, Hawaii.  And Nevada and New Mexico (the latter's having a very large Hispanic population).

Do Democrats really believe that they can continue to ignore the folks in "Flyover Country"--perhaps even display open contempt for them--and still win national elections?

If you look at the county map, the division between Democrat and Republican, between Liberal and any part of the Conservative spectrum, is actually a division between urban and rural. A very small fraction of the US land area is predominantly Democrat.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Bingo. The democrats and republicans still won pretty much the same counties and districts they normally win with low turnout across the board.

Michigan and Wisconsin are no real surprise to anyone who has been paying attention. I myself have been saying that republicans would start winning presidential races in Michigan again. Outside of two democrat senators the state is pretty solidly dominated by republicans. Nothing has really changed on this map for several years since the departure of Bart Stupak.

Michigan and Wisconsin both have much longer histories with the GOP than democrats.  The party was formed in Ripon Wisconsin and the first party convention was held in Jackson Michigan.
