Source: Trump To Offer Mattis, Romney, Mnuchin Cabinet Jobs

Posted By Vince Coglianese On 2:05 PM 11/19/2016 In | No Comments

Donald Trump wants Gen. James Mattis to run the Department of Defense, Gov. Mitt Romney to run the State Department, and Steven Mnuchin to run the Treasury Department.

That’s according to a source with intimate knowledge of Trump’s thinking.

By Friday, Trump had narrowed down cabinet roles for Mattis to either Defense or State, but prefers Romney to take the latter job, the source tells The Daily Caller.

Mattis and Romney were scheduled to meet with the president-elect Saturday at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey. Romney and Mnuchin were both spotted by reporters there Saturday afternoon.

Reached by email Friday evening, Mattis declined to confirm whether he expected to be tapped to run the Pentagon. “Nothing for me to talk about now,” he told TheDC, adding, “Hope all goes well.”

Romney and Mnuchin could not immediately be reached and the Trump campaign did not immediately return a request for comment.

Romney — the Republican Party’s 2012 nominee for president — is the former governor of Massachusetts, and was among Trump’s fiercest Republican critics during the 2016 election.

[dcquiz] “Donald Trump is a phony, a fraud,” Romney said during a televised speech in March. “His promises are as worthless as a degree from Trump University.”

But Romney was greeted warmly Saturday upon arriving at Trump National.

“Mr. President-Elect, how are you sir?” Romney greeted Trump, who was waiting alongside Vice President-Elect Mike Pence at the club’s front entrance. “How are you, sir?” Trump replied, as they reportedly “gripped each other’s arms,” before walking inside.

Mnuchin is a former partner at Goldman Sachs who served as Trump’s national finance chairman during the campaign. Mnuchin also previously worked for liberal billionaire George Soros at Soros Fund Management LLC.

Mattis, the former commander of U.S. Joint Forces Command and NATO Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, retired from the Marine Corps in 2013 after serving as the commander of U.S. Central Command, which oversees all U.S. military action in the Middle East.

He would need a congressional waiver to accept the Defense Secretary position since the law requires people who take the job to have been civilians for at least the seven years prior.

“Mad Dog” Mattis has a legendary status among Marines for his reputation as a warfighter. He’s also among the most quotable people alive.

When the Marines arrived in Iraq in 2003, Mattis advised them in a speech: “Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet.”

John Bolton was just talking about this on Judge Jeannine tonight; Fox News rebroadcasts that at about 11 CST or so. Bolton did not care for Romney to be chosen, he said it was largely what his, Trump supporters were against, the establishment and Bolton seemed to say it might be a slap in the face of supporters. After all, it looks like Romney sent out McMullin to try to take Utah and the presidency away from Trump.

Huckabee was on too.

So, Mitt is competent. SOS is a big job, that's really one of the things that tripped Clinton up, something goes wrong, one gets the blame. But Mitt should be patriotic; he's done all of his jobs well. I think I can accept it if he is chosen.

I heard somewhere there would be a big announcement tomorrow, I guess this is it.

And check Judge Jeannine out later, if one has a chance.

My thought exactly.

Sounds to me like he really did sell his supporters a bill of goods:  they certainly didn't get what they were sold.  But they won't have the honor or the decency to admit it.  Instead they'll simply prevaricate and say they knew it all along.

Romney at the State department will be a relief over the total shitshow we have had the last 8 years.

There's also this,

Romney might be the best man for the job but I'm not accepting it as fact, that Mitt Romney will be offered Secretary of State.

Yesterday, we were being told Mike Huckabee was going to be the ambassador to Israel and the embassy moved to Jerusalem.

--------

Dealing with ISIS, Putin, and whatever else, refugees maybe, that is a hard job and there will be a lot on one's shoulders for whomever they pick.

It's not a job anyone can do.

Maybe Romney is best for the job if selected.

Romney was savvy last time, he saw Russia as a threat, that was mocked by Obama but by golly, that ended up occurring.

Maybe there are other instances like this.

These will be wise choices. Nothing to complain about with this round if they pan out and aren't just rumors.

I gotta defend Trump here.  He didn't sell them a bad bill of goods.  Trump never said he would bring down the GOP establishment.  The signs have been there all along that he was yielding to them all along.  Trump supporters have simply take their own positions and attributed them to Trump with zero evidence to support it.  And then when Trump's true positions are revealed, they spin it as some type of brilliance.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

Wasn't Goldman Sachs the biggest baddest boogieman during the primary??? And Heidi Cruz was some sort of devil for working there, right? And Ted Cruz was "owned" by them because he borrowed money to start his campaign using his stock holdings as collateral...

No hypocrisy with Trump supporters, none whatsoever...

Trump stated awhile back during the primaries that he needed to be more establishment ... seems like his supporters didn't seem to care about that comment.

IMHO I don't think he's going to place Romney in a cabinet position, especially as his Secy of State; he and Trump differ too much on their viewpoints of Russia and Putin.

Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly, do not claim to be wiser than you are.  Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.  If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all…do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
