Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry is being considered for Secretary of the Department of Energy in President-elect Donald Trump's administration.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Perry — who governed Texas from 2000-2015 and who was a Republican candidate for president in the 2012 and 2016 elections — is on Trump's shortlist.

As The Hill notes, Perry couldn't remember the name of the Department of Energy while trying to deliver a line during a 2011 presidential debate.

"It's three agencies of government when I get there that are gone: commerce, education, and the uh ... what's the third one, there? Let's see... The third one. I can't," Perry said. "Oops."

Perry has stayed in the spotlight since withdrawing from the 2016 campaign last September. He endorsed Texas Sen. Ted Cruz in January, but once it was clear Trump would be the party's nominee, he threw his support to Trump in May.

As part of his endorsement, Perry also offered to serve as Trump's vice president.

Perry was also a contestant on "Dancing With The Stars" before being eliminated in the show's third week in September.

I think this is a good place for him, also like him running the VA.
Perry has advocated for Veterans, and is one, himself.

This might be an excellent area for him. Hope he'd cut the waste out of the department, before recommending it be scrapped on his way out the door.

Can't blame Democrats for jumping all over appointing a guy to run a Department whose name he couldn't remember.  It's certainly a shot I'd take if I was on their side.

The DOE operates our nuclear program.  Los Alamos is a DOE facility, as an example.

That program is under the DOE because it isn't just a military program.  There are the nuclear weapons aspect, but also the nuclear power one as well.

And before anyone asks why the government has its hands in this energy production sector... do you really want the nuclear industry as a free for all, with fissile material and nuclear waste handled on a hodge-podge basis, set by companies with and eye for maximizing profit and minimizing costs?
