WASHINGTON — Paul Ryan was unanimously chosen for another term as House speaker by his Republican colleagues on Tuesday as he called for his party to unite behind President-elect Donald Trump.

The 46-year-old Wisconsin Republican, who was often at odds with Trump during the long presidential campaign, has pledged to work closely with the president-elect to advance Trump's agenda.

"Welcome to the dawn of a new unified Republican government," Ryan declared at a news conference a few hours before the closed-door leadership elections. "It feels really good to say that, actually. This will be a government focused on turning President-elect Trump’s victory into real progress for the American people. Our team is very excited, and we cannot wait to get to work."

Ryan faces an election by the full House in January, when the new Congress convenes and will vote for Speaker. He must win a majority of House members — 218 votes — to keep his job, and Republicans will control at least 239 seats.

Good.  It'll be interesting to see when he starts cracking the whip on Donnie Boy.

Was there ever a doubt?
"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

According to the Branch Trumpians Trump was going to excoriate Ryan and drive him from office.

If you recently chatted with an #AlwaysTrumper, he was not only going to lose but also be deported.

Instead, pure political survival for the GOP House majority will require Ryan and the other House Republicans to honor the separation of powers, and to hold Trump accountable.

IIRC it was @Longmire that wanted Donny to go all Mob Boss on Congressman Ryan and simply have him removed.

Some of the dumber ones at the TOS believe if they just call republicans in the house that they will vote against him in January.  Either that or they think that the Donald will make them vote against him.

I'm not a huge fan of Ryan but if it gets their panties in a twist then it makes me smile.  They are delusional enough to believe that the Donald actually cares what they want. :silly:

I don't have time to chat. I'm too busy running from the dogs they sent out to hunt me down with. They are out there. Waiting for me... But if I somehow manage to survive, I'll be sure to ask them how this happened.

I'm hoping Ryan holds the line on Trump's spending wishes and scraps his dumb tariff idea.

I can dream, can't I?
I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them.

Probably more than a dream.  As I said above -- if the GOP knuckles under to Trump, especially on stupid things, they'll get wiped out in the mid-terms.  They have a vested interest in keeping Trump in line.

I hope your assessment is correct. But the history isn't convincing

Looks like the GOPe is firmly in control now.  Thanks to Trump.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

-Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."

-Ayn Rand-

They have had a vested interest all along and somehow always seem to almost always do the one thing that benefits liberals,. Budget, Iran, Obamacare etc. So people should keep their expectations based in the past performance of the same crew going into DC in Jan. to avoid any unwanted surprises.

Trump is going to need Ryan a lot more than Ryan will need Trump.  Trump doesn't get diddly enacted into law without Ryan's say so; however, with a couple of additional votes from the democrats Ryan can get Trump vetoes overridden.
