NeverTrumpers Eat Humble Pie
David Krayden
11/11/2016

“I’ll call Donald Trump to offer my support,” enthused former NeverTrumper Glenn Beck after readjusting his universe to the presence of the new president-elect.  Was this reassuring to the Trump team?  Had an entire constituency come home?

Perhaps not.  Beck may have squandered his political capital long before he joined the NeverTrumpers and established a micro-niche in cyberspace.  First there was the late afternoon talk show on Fox News where Beck routinely dabbled in political history and had an hour of major network time to chew on his assorted obsessions while challenging his audience to make some sense of it.  He carried his sophomoric approach to radio where he and a pack of wisecracking pals would do their best interpretation of frat house conversation.  So I’m sure Trump is saying, “Thank you.  We’ll be in touch.”

But others are coming home – with a varying degree of enthusiasm.

The folks at the ever-petulant National Review, which sometimes seems like the Shadow Review because it’s not as conservative as it purports to be, had some humble pie to eat as well.  While giving qualified acceptance of the election results, the editorial staff studiously avoided any mention of the magazine’s pre-election issue with a cover depicting an embattled Republican elephant being submerged by a Democratic blue wave.

Glenn Beck really? The guy who was fasting and holding prayer vigils against Trump's success and railing against him as if he wanted Trump to disintegrate off the face of the Earth. This guy called Trump?

I would bet that Beck never spoke to Trump himself, and he never will. He may have talked to some staffer to 'pass along' his best wishes, but that is as close as he got.

Beck was more than a mere NeverTrump, he was psychotically obsessed with Trump losing. Just as Trump said during the campaign, 'I don't care if Jeb endorses me or not.' And I think Trump said the same thing about many NeverTrump Republicans. Any time a Republican would refuse to endorse Trump, his standard response was, "Screw him. I don't care. I don't need his endorsement." In that way, on the small outside chance Trump actually received Beck's well wishes, I have no doubt he just shrugged and said, 'Who cares?'

He's already starting to backpeddle on Obamacare and going after Cankles. What will they be eating then?

I don't know what that is supposed to mean, but winning tastes real, real, good. Especially when it is followed by a glass of champagne and a big fat cigar. lol

Good Grief. You guys are irrationally relentless.
The guy has only been in office for [Oh wait!] he's not even in office yet at all. I forgot.

He has said nothing about Obamacare that he did not say on the campaign trail. And it doesn't matter anyway. Anything he says from now until January 20 is meaningless. It does not matter what he says, it is what he does that counts. He hasn't done anything.

My opinion is that he is playing Obama. He needs Obama's support during the transition. By convincing Obama that his Obamacare will survive, he prevents Obama from shutting down and becoming uncooperative during this critical time. Have no fear NeverTrump, Obamacare will be repealed. There is just no doubt of that.

All of these 'reports' are just click bait nonsense. But I'm sure you guys will cling to them like a bulldog, praying that Trump changes his mind or whatever. Keep the faith my friends. You have been wrong about everything you have said for two years now, maybe you'll be right and I will be wrong for once. You guys deserve to be right about something, at least once.

Campaign promises of Franklin Roosevelt in 1932: A 25% reduction in government spending, a balanced federal budget, restoration of a sound currency, reduction of government intervention in agriculture. Running mate John Nance Garner said that Herbert Hoover “was leading the country down the road to socialism.”

FLASH forward: Will Trump keep his promises? Already, "repeal and replace" Obamacare has morphed into "amend". Trump wants a trillion dollar spending stimulus for infrastructure, with no changes to entitlements yet promises to balance the budget in 8 years...

I saw a clip on the CBS evening news yesterday with Trump saying he would repeal and replace obamacare simultaneously while keeping a few of the best parts of obamacare.

You are doing the typical internet thing by characterizing something I said in an absurd way, as if I said that, in an attempt to make me look foolish. You know full well that is nothing like nowhere near what I said.

He is a negotiator. He is going to say what he needs to say to appease Obama as long as he needs him. As far as Hilderbeast, he has no reason at all to tip her off to what he may do. You guys are grasping at straws.

Let him do what he does at least until he gets into office. Only then will your criticisms have any meaning. If he gets into office and starts changing his mind about all of his promises, then I will be the first to bow down humbly and agree that all of you were right.

Give him a chance. Let's see what he actually does before any heads start exploding.

Yep.

Also if stimulus money is awarded per contract what would be wrong with that? There would be the same result if Congress passed a stimulus bill as the last ones. The money would disappear into a black hole.

But say they awarded someone a contract like @Frank Cannon's "lay her while she is hot" road construction company to redo Route 66 from mile marker 1 to 15, it would be better.

Well, the Trumpers certainly don't seem to have any "humble" to spare, so I don't know where I'd find a pie to eat.

@240B

There are two stories out there that contradict his position on Obamacare. So I guess we'll have to wait and see which one is the right one. But if the one about him wanting to keep aspects of Obamacare in place are true, along with his desire to have a stimulus type spending like Barack Obama did, he's probably going to run into a lot of trouble from not only conservatives but many members in Congress. It would mean that he does buy the left's premise of government involvement in healthcare and the economy but that we should just do it smarter and better.

The reason many of us conservatives are leery of him is because he has never held office before and he seems to be all over the map on these issues and statements he makes . So were left guessing what he will really do but, as you said, we will wait-and-see

That is exactly right. Trump is shrewd. You can never know what he is up to. That is why his actions are more important than his words. He is a negotiator. So, he is used to bluffing and manipulating to get what he needs to move to the next level. I think he wants to keep Obama happy until Jan20. We don't know.

Beside all that, anything that he wants to do will be influenced by Congress anyway. So, there are many aspects of these issues that are not entirely under his control. For example assigning a special prosecutor for Hillary is not something that he can do. That is why all this speculation two months out is meaningless.

Between what he wants, and what Congress actually passes, it is impossible to know what the final outcome of all of this will be. We have to wait and see.

Many of these articles I have seen about him 'backpedaling' seem to me at least to be hit pieces intentionally trying to sow doubt in supporters. And apparently it is working.

I just don't believe that Trump will let his people down. If that happened, there would be such an uproar in the nation that it would be historic. March on Washington, flooding the phone banks, America would not tolerate a betrayal by Trump. It just wouldn't be allowed to stand.

Somehow opposition to Obamacare has morphed from being against government-controlled healthcare to supporting government-controlled healthcare so long as "our side" designs the control.
