DoD identifies three U.S. soldiers killed outside base in Jordan

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Defense Department has identified three soldiers killed in a shooting this week outside a military base in Jordan.

The department said Sunday that 27-year-old Staff Sgt. Matthew C. Lewellen, of Lawrence, Kansas; 30-year-old Staff Sgt. Kevin J. McEnroe of Tucson, Arizona; and 27-year-old Staff Sgt. James F. Moriarty of Kerrville, Texas, died Friday after the convoy they were in came under fire as it entered a Jordanian military base.

The Defense Department is investigating.

The department said the soldiers were assigned to the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) from Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Lewellen’s family said in a statement to The Kirksville Daily Express he was raised in Kirksville, Missouri, and was a “born leader, a true American.” They said his military awards included the Bronze Star and Army Commendation Medal.

Moriarty family spokesman Wayne Dolcefino said Saturday that family was notified by the military Friday evening.

I heard the other day, the report that it was one of the deadliest days in a while for the US military; but I had not heard about these fatalities in Jordan at all. Quite a tragedy.

That the other day was for our losing 2 soldiers in Afghanistan.

Still looking into this, more details. These are just early reports.

3 U.S. military trainers killed in gunfire by security units at Jordan base

AMMAN, Jordan — At least three U.S. military trainers in Jordan were fatally shot by security forces Friday when their vehicle failed to stop at the gate of a military base, Jordanian and U.S. officials said.

The U.S. military service members “came under fire” as they approached a Jordanian training facility, said Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook. Few other details about the incident were given. Cook said U.S. and Jordanian authorities were investigating the cause.

Earlier, Jordan’s military said there was “an exchange of gunfire” after the vehicle’s driver ignored demands to stop outside an air base in southern Jordan. A Jordanian officer was injured, the statement said.

Initial reports called the shooting an accident or misunderstanding and said the soldiers failed to stop at a security checkpoint.

But later, the family was told the American soldiers were intentionally shot and that a manhunt was underway to find them, KHOU reported.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said the U.S. was focused on "getting to the bottom" of what happened and expected Jordanian cooperation in the investigation.

This is the problem with getting involved over there, this has happened in Afghanistan and probably Iraq too; someone who we perceive should be on our side, shoots our soldiers. It seems unavoidable.
