We do not live in a democracy, we live in a republic. We elect representatives to serve our interests in government. Our elections operate the same way. We vote for slates of Presidential electors who pledge to vote for a party’s nominee should they win the state. Although, this isn’t legally binding in the same way that your Congressman isn’t legally bound to vote for a bill that their party supports. Instead, Presidential electors can vote for whoever they want. This doesn’t happen very often, but this year is an exceptional one.
