My view is McMulligan isn't trying to help. He isn't trying to fix things. He doesn't really stand for anything. He is merely a turd in the punch bowl.
Not at all. He's a patriot, a hero and an honorable man, who also happens to be a conservative. As Gary Johnson continues to demonstrate his profound weaknesses on foreign policy, McMullin is (for those outside of Utah) THE viable option for conservatives who want to remain neutral in the Presidential election.
And that's the real issue heading into these last few days. Do conservatives who recognize the dangers of Donald Trump - both to the nation and the future viability of the conservative movement - choose to stay neutral or act to defeat it?
Consider this - the next few years will be rocky, but if we can hold Congress the crapulence of Hillary Clinton will be exposed and investigated, and together with the bankruptcy of her policies will set the stage for a roaring comeback by conservatives in 2018.
The task ahead will be to unite the clans. That means acknowledging the efficacy of some of Trump's message, even as the messenger must be rejected as utterly unfit for office. Give Trump his due - he roused a populist groundswell. I don't dismiss - and neither should Republican "elites" - the agony of the working class after eight years of slow growth and inattention. The next step is to unite behind a message with a sane messenger - perhaps Mike Pence.
The days following the election will be instructive. Will Trump claim personal grievance, or will he at last behave as a leader, and urge his constituents to reconcile with the rest of us who must do the hard work of addressing the House of Clinton? If he was really, as some suspect, a stalking horse for the Clintons, his post-election behavior will make that clear enough.
