Democrats turn on Comey after he reopens Clinton email wound

Republicans are also rethinking their opinion on the FBI director.

Democrats have soured on James Comey.

In July, they praised the FBI director's decision not to recommend charges against Hillary Clinton over her use of a private email server while serving as secretary of state. But on Friday, top party officials turned on Comey — ripping him not only for taking new steps into an investigation they hoped was over, but also for the way he announced them.

Comey sent a letter to several congressional leaders to inform them that the FBI had come across new emails pertinent to its Clinton investigation and would take additional steps to look into them, adding that the FBI did not yet know if the emails were significant and that he did not yet know when the additional review would be finished.

So effectively, Comey is damned either way he goes.   He just needs to do "the right thing"....no matter how painful or controversial it is.  He needs to just do his friggin job....and investigate whatever warrants investigation.  At this point, his reputation is already trashed due to his refusal previously to do his job.  He might as well go for the gold and trash his career by going against Hillary (and Obama).  The only thing he has to lose at this point is his life.  (oh wait....)

Exactly.

He must certainly have realized that sending that letter -- now, and not after November 8 -- he would be influencing the course of the election by doing so.

He must certainly have realized that the consequences of doing so would negatively impact the clinton campaign, and possibly do enough damage to give Mr. Trump the boost he needs to win.

Comey understands that to protect both his honor AND his job (and perhaps his life?), he had to put into the public sphere something that would turn the tide of the election from Clinton to Trump. And he's done it.

Otherwise, why else would he do it NOW?

There's been talk that he was trying to eclipse further releases from wikileaks, some of which may have been so damaging that national security or obama (personally) would become involved.
But if wikileaks has emails that damaging, they're gonna release 'em anyway, in time.

Comey might have waited. But how long?
- If clinton wins, he might have sent the letter in the interregnum, but I doubt that could prevent her from being inaugurated.
- I sense that upon taking office, clinton would concoct a reason to fire Comey (the president -can- terminate the FBI director "for cause"). Kicked out of office, he would have missed the chance to "restore his honor" and be out of a job to boot.

I think it's more than just "honor".
I think it's got sumthin' to do with revenge, as well.
