by Editorial Staff · Published October 21, 2016
The first ship to be named for a then-still living former president, the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) is nowadays the Navy’s only forward-deployed aircraft carrier. The flagship of the only forward-based carrier strike group, Carrier Strike Group Five, the USS Reagan is currently part of the United States Seventh Fleet. Headquartered at U.S. Fleet Activities Yokosuka, in Japan, it is presently the largest of the forward-deployed U.S. Navy fleets, with 60 to 70 ships, 300 aircraft and 40,000 Navy and Marine Corps personnel. It is undoubtedly the centerpiece of American forward presence in Asia.
