Blue-collar voters, a key bloc for Trump, are angry and anxious

SWANTON, Ohio — Kristin and Jason Swander work at a Kroger. They're nice folks. He's 38 and a grocery clerk. She's 34 and works as a clerk in the liquor store. Together they earn about $60,000, enough to own a house in Fremont, Ohio, near a decent public school for their two kids.

"I'm not angry," says Jason, who's wearing a red "Make America Great Again" cap at a campaign rally Tuesday.

But he said, "We struggle every day," and Donald Trump is more likely to ease the frustrations. "He cares about people. He wants to lower taxes and help middle-class people."

Conversations with a few dozen Ohioans at rallies this week around Toledo — a Hillary Clinton event at a downtown library featuring Vice President Joe Biden, another with Trump's running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, at the airport in Swanton — revealed much common ground between the working-class voters who support each ticket.

How is raising taxes on the every day stuff these people buy (through a 35% tariff) going to help these middle class people?

Like most Trump voters, this poor fella is clueless.

Sadly, they have been sold a bill of goods. They have been told that trade protectionism will help bring back the good-paying manufacturing jobs that used to dominate the upper Midwest.  Instead, it will both raise the price of imported goods and hasten the flow of jobs offshore, as retailers facing lower sales will seek alternative markets in a world where both labor and capital are increasingly fungible.
"The most terrifying force of death, comes from the hands of Men who wanted to be left Alone. They try, so very hard, to mind their own business and provide for themselves and those they love. They resist every impulse to fight back, knowing the forced and permanent change of life that will come from it. They know, that the moment they fight back, their lives as they have lived them, are over. -Alexander Solzhenitsyn

I think this election will come down to two demographics, unless the Indies break hard in one direction or the other - the crossovers, and the skip overs. Trump has the Nevertrumps that won't vote for him, and Hillary has the Bernies and the blue collar dems to worry about. Then you got the skip overs, those that will vote neither and skip over them to the next race on the ballot, stay home, or vote third party.

The Republic is lost.
