Poll: Trump's lead narrows to 3 in Texas

By Harper Neidig

Donald Trump’s lead over Hillary Clinton in Texas has dwindled to just three points, according to a new University of Houston poll.

Trump has 41 percent support in the state, with Clinton at 38 percent. Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson and Green Party nominee Jill Stein trail with four and one percent, respectively.

Republicans have won Texas in the last nine preisdential races — and won by at least 11 points in the last four in a row.

The last Democrat to come close was former President Bill Clinton in his 1996 reelection race, when he lost the state by about five points to Bob Dole.

The University of Houston poll indicates that this year Texas voters are equally unsatisfied with both candidates. Forty-eight percent said they would rate their attitude towards Trump as very unfavorable and 47 percent said the same about Clinton.

Forty-one percent rated Clinton as very or somewhat favorable, while that figure for Trump is 40 percent.

Most of the state’s voters believe that Clinton has the upper hand. Fifty-three percent say they think she will be the next president, while just 23 percent think it will be Trump.

The poll surveyed 1,000 registered voters from Oct. 7-15. It has a margin of error of 3 percentage points.

And yet....Trump hasn't bothered to run ads in Texas.   If he loses the state, would it have done any good?  We'll never know.  Trump's own arrogance is his most effective opponent.  And the last thing this nation needs is yet another arrogant POS in the WH.

In Texas as well as in other Red states, it's not that Hilliary is gaining any support its that Trump is losing support. If Trump is going to lose anyway why not vote your conscious

If I were still in Texas, I would vote down ticket only.

I think there will be far, far fewer votes cast in Texas in the presidential election than ever before.

Not just in Texas.  This election will be historic re: the number of people that will refuse to vote for either candidate.

This ought to put fear in the Cruz's and Farentholds and the gutless Texas GOP delegation that went all in on Trump.

They helped Trump ruin the GOP not only in Texas, but nationwide.

I am so glad to have left this dumpster fire.

Texas is in play.

I railed against Trump for his remarks about Hispanics.  I said they'd remember his words in November.  I was right.

But the Trump supporters thought those words foolish then.

Now who's foolish?

The Hispanics are important, but it's the Texas GOP women.  They've had enough of Trump in places like Dallas, Houston, San Antonio.

Hispanics make up a good chunk of eligible voters, if the bothered to register and vote.  Enough so that Arizona and Texas would and could become permanently blue.  Up until now, however, no one upset the apple cart and so, there was no real desire *TO* vote.

Trump not only upset the apple cart, he's supported those who have committed violence against Hispanics... all the while insulting them and claiming that their native born can never be American.

You'd better believe they are tee'd off.  More than just tee'd off.

Heck, Mexican drug lord, Joaquín Guzmán, has a standing hit job open against Trump.

That's the level of hatred Trump has engendered.

In addition to everything that has already been mentioned, there are a couple of other points regarding Trump's polling numbers in Texas.

First, he lost Texas in the primaries.  An intelligent person would make note of that

Second, Trump ignored point number one.  Any intelligent person, if they had the ability to recognize point number one, would easily see that in order to win a state that they had lost -- and the entire race -- they have to coalesce the supporters of other candidates to vote for them. Trump didn't do that.  He attacks other Republicans on a daily basis, much more often than he attacks Hillary.

Trump is his own worst enemy.

Same here in my little corner of TX  You wouldn't even think there was an election going on.

I'm in central California and I've seen very few bumper stickers for either candidate. Even on a major freeway going north/south between large cities (the bay area and LA area). That is not normal at this point in a presidential election. There are a couple large Trump signs along the freeway in open fields. I don't think I've seen a regular yard sign for either candidate yet...

No doubt.  The guy has been Speaker for almost a whole year, and I still can't get a breakfast burrito at TacoBell after 11am.  This is Hispanic outreach?

Valley Ranch (North Irving) remains 75% Republican. Cruz outpolled Dewhurst in the first primary.

I know of no one in their right mind that would consider posting a Trump sign in their yard. Both parties have been put on notice for their failures.

Per RCP, 5 other polls have Trump up 3, 4, 7, 7, and 6% (and chronologically)

I'd say Rueters (6th poll and 25%) is an outlier.

I was very unhappy with the rise of the Trumpeters and their glee.  But anytime you criticize DT, you set yourself up for a barrage of criticism and ugly name calling.  Unfortunately the GOP has hitched its wagon to this falling star.

Trump believes his "magic" is sufficient to win over the doubters.  What he's done is repulsed the fence-sitters and made doubters of many erstwhile backers.

This election is going to go down as a glaring example of an opportunity lost.  GOP voters had a golden, rare opportunity to finally put the Clintons away for the rest of their nefarious lives.  And they found a way to resuscitate their influence by nominating the only candidate with no ability to defeat Hillary.  This one is for the books.
