Iraq has requested an emergency session of the UN Security Council over the presence of unauthorized Turkish troops in northern Iraq. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi later told reporters the presence of Turkish troops "is one of the challenges" ahead of the Mosul operation, warning that Ankara's insistence could lead to a "regional warfare". On Wednesday, Ankara and Baghdad each summoned the other's ambassador in protest at remarks from the other camp.

Turkey's Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson condemned the Iraqi parliament's decision to remove the troops from Bashiqa camp, while the Iraqi envoy to Ankara was summoned to the ministry. Turkey's military presence in Iraq is at the invitation of Masoud Barzani, who is president of the Kurdish regional government with which Turkey has solid ties.
