But the implosion of Donald Trump's presidential bid –– and the Republican civil war sparked by his incendiary campaign –– has left the Democrats with fresh new hopes that the GOP nominee will doom the Republicans down-ballot and return the Speaker's gavel to Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) after six years in the minority wilderness.
On Wednesday, the Democrats blasted out their first bit of evidence in the form of an internal poll finding that Stephanie Murphy, a Florida Democrat, has taken a two-point lead over Rep. John Mica (Fla.), a 12-term Republican who has endorsed Trump.
There are a lot of Republican canddiates who are supporting Trump only because they find Hillary to be worse. For that to be acceptable to voters, the case of exactly how bad Hillary is must be made convincingly. Unfortunately, too many of the people who should be making the case against Hillary are instead making the case against Trump.
I mentioned this elsewhere, but Republicans and conservatives who don't support Trump need to get over their seemingly reflexive need to make that point repeatedly, and instead spend their efforts pointing out how horrible Hillary is. They don't have to
defend Trump, but they also don't have to be complicit in aiding the Democrat narrative that he's so very much worse than Hillary. For the sake of balance, and to protect what we have in Congress, those efforts should be refocused into reminding voters how terrible a candidate Hillary is.
Unfortunately, it seems to many Republicans/conservatives have taken the bait to make this election about Trump's flaws.
