TUCSON - Southern Arizona Border Patrol agents have had to deal with an uptick in assaults, and apprehending drug traffickers, sex offenders and human smugglers as the weather has cooled down.

Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents were assaulted during separate incidents just hours apart, authorities said.

Agents assigned to the Special Operations Detachment, working in a remote area west of Tucson late Sept. 28, encountered two Mexican nationals armed with rifles. While attempting to arrest the individuals, one subject ran. When an agent caught up with the subject, an altercation ensued and a second agent had to assist in subduing the subject. One agent suffered a dislocated shoulder during the altercation. Agents also seized four weapons during the encounter.

A few hours later, Douglas Border Patrol Station agents encountered two Mexican nationals illegally present in the U.S. As agents were arresting the subjects, one refused to comply and punched an agent in the throat and torso before being subdued.
