Clinton hits Trump: 'What kind of genius loses a billion dollars?'

By Ben Kamisar

Hillary Clinton ripped Donald Trump over the report in The New York Times that he may have turned a nearly $1 billion loss into 15 years of not owing taxes, saying he was "taking from America with both hands, leaving the rest of us with the bill."

The tax story was the centerpiece of Clinton's argument on the economy, which came in the swing state of Ohio — which the Democratic presidential nominee had not visited since Labor Day.

"While millions of American families, including mine and yours, were working hard, paying our fair share, it seems he was contributing nothing to our nation," she said during the rally in Toledo.

"He’s been dissing America in this whole campaign. He talks us down, makes disparaging comments about our country, calls our military a disaster. It’s not, but it might have been if everyone else had failed to pay taxes to support our great men and women in uniform."

Polls have shown Trump and Clinton in a tight race in Ohio, where the Republican nominee's attacks on trade have resonated. The RealClearPolitics average of polls has Trump up 2 points in the state.

But the report in the Times published on Saturday gave Clinton new ammunition to use against the celebrity businessman.

The Times report showed that Trump could have gotten away without paying those taxes thanks to writing off more than $900 million in losses back in 1995.

Clinton cast Trump as a careless businessman, a direct affront at his campaign's selling point that he knows how to fix the country because of his business acumen.

“How anyone can lose a dollar, let alone a billion dollars, in the casino industry is beyond me," she said with a smile, casually leaning onto the podium.

After he lost the money, Clinton claimed, "he didn't lift a finger to help protect his employees, or all the small businesses and contractors he hired."

"They all got hammered while he was busy with his accountants trying to figure out how he could keep living like a billionaire," she said.

And the former first lady attacked the Trump campaign's defense of his lack of tax liability. Trump's allies have claimed the deduction is standard practice.

"What kind of genius loses a billion dollars in a single year?" Clinton responded with a laugh, after posing the Trump' campaign's defense.

"This is Trump to a T. He’s taken corporate excess and made a business model out of it. He abuses his power, games the system, puts his own interests ahead of the country. It’s Trump first and everyone else last."

She also chided Trump for refusing to release his tax returns himself, and called for a federal law to compel major party nominees to release their returns.

Trump teed it up for Hillary, IMO.

Without producing tax returns or financial statements, Trump is asking the American voter to "trust him" on his personal finances.

Instead of focusing on the economy, and Obama's third term, Trump has been flailing away in the Brea Tar Pits for nearly a year and a half.

 From the article...

"This is Trump to a T. He’s taken corporate excess and made a business model out of it. He abuses his power, games the system, puts his own interests ahead of the country. It’s Trump first and everyone else last."

Did she say this with a straight face?
I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them.

The same kind of genius that loses 6 blackberries in a year, one trillion dollars from the State department, and thirty thousand emails?

Birds of a feather.

And I'd like to know what she and her husband pay in taxes.

They paid millions in taxes, but their earnings came from laundering money through paid speeches and monetizing their influence in DC. The "taxes" were built into their cost of sales, just like any corporation. Their travel was paid through the Clinton Foundation, and their only charitable contributions were to the Clinton Foundation.

The blackberries are old news, and the 6 billion lost in the State Department is being assiduously avoided by the MSM. Too late for anyone else to pick up that trail.

Also, how many hundreds of millions of dollars did the Clinton Foundation lose from Haiti donations?

I think a better question would be, "what does Haiti have to show for $13 billion in aid?" It was during Hillary's tenure as SoS.

In 2014 the State Dept lost 6 Billion of the tax payers money under the BEAST. TRUMP loses 1 Billion of his OWN money and the LIBS are Pissed. He does a loss carried forward on his taxes and the LIBS said that is not fair. CHANGE the LAW if it is not fair and tell the people who just sold their homes because they are under water that losses carried forward are not fair??? :silly:

What kind of genius loses a billion dollars?

Larry Kudlow has a very good analysis how Donald Trump (who personally signed for his loan, btw) got hammered by a 1986 tax reform bill that failed to grandfather existing real estate development.

Not surprisingly, the early 90s suffered a significant downturn in real estate market and in Atlantic City the entire casino/gambling sector, including three other big-name casinos in addition to Mr. Trump's, was hit hard.  Fortunately, Mr. Trump was able to come back from those terrible losses.

That's the kind of moxie I'm looking for in a leader -- don't give up, fight your way back.

As for his tax returns. It's a media/DNC creation and a diversionary assault by our fifth column, headed by the New York Times (currently under Mexican ownership – are you surprised?).

The following thanks to Sinkspur:

When Donald Trump Got in Trouble with the SEC

Regulator said the case offered a “stark” example of deception.

These days the charade of company-doctored earnings is getting increasing attention. But it’s important to recall that the first enterprise the Securities and Exchange Commission charged for this practice of rampantly spinning its results was an Atlantic City casino empire. Its founder, chairman, and promoter-in-chief at the time: None other than current GOP frontrunner Donald J. Trump.

Also notable: Trump settled the case with the SEC, rather than fight the charges—something that Trump recently has said he never does.

.............

In June of 2002, when the SEC brought the landmark action against Trump Hotels and Casino Resorts, the agency said it pursued the Trump case—its first for this type of abuse—because it provided a “stark illustration of how pro-forma numbers can be used deceptively and the mischief they can cause.” The agency accused Trump Hotels of using “fraudulent” reporting used to “tout purportedly positive results.”

........./

So who was Trump Hotels’ auditor at the time? What accounting firm could possibly call randomly inheriting an upgrade in décor as operating income? It was Arthur Andersen, the now-defunct firm that was overseeing Enron’s books at the during the same period, and that notoriously counted Enron’s sale of Nigerian barges as operating income, perpetuating one of the greatest frauds in corporate history. By 2005, Trump Hotels and Resorts was bankrupt. Now that its ex-chairman is running for president, it’s worth remembering where the big fuss over bogus numbers all got started.

THE ORANGE MENACE IS A CON MAN AND CAN NEVER BE IN THE WHITE HOUSE!!!!

Wow.   And the Trump corruption beat goes on.....

and on....and on.....
No quarter given to the enemy within...ever.

You can vote your way into socialism, but you have to shoot your way out of it.

FWIW, I'm in the real estate business and when I've shown my tax returns to banks I'm looking for loans from I always have to sit there and explain the various schedules to them. I always get the initial response of "don't worry I've been doing this for 20+ years I know how to read them" and after 5 minutes it's obvious that they don't. These people are not the on the floor new employees, but are the back office managers of the depts.

One thing I will give Trump credit for is taking a chance and when things went bad turning around and starting over.
