Trump suggests vets with PTSD aren’t ‘strong’ and ‘can’t handle it’

WASHINGTON — Donald Trump suggested veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder aren't "strong" and “can’t handle it” during a Monday morning event with veterans.

"When people come back from war and combat and they see maybe what the people in this room have seen many times over, and you're strong and you can handle it, but a lot of people can't handle it," Trump told an audience that included a number of senior former military officers Monday morning.

Trump's comments came as he was attacking how the Veterans Administration has been run, blaming it for the rise in military and veteran suicides.

"People are killing themselves what are waiting on line because they have days and days before what could be a simple procedure, a simple prescription, and the wait is so long, they can't take it," he said.

If only the vets were as battle hardened as veterans of the NY dating scene in the 1970s.  Dodging those STDs was tough business.

Agit prop headline.

I'm reading and re-reading Trump's comments and I fail to see how this is a big deal. What he said is absolutely true and even those vets who are not "strong" can't argue with his sentiments.

Which are and have been that the VA is broken and must be fixed.

Maybe Trump should run down to the VA and slap some sense into the PTSD soldiers.  That worked so well for Gen Patton.

But hey, aren't  you just admitting Trump is the latest incarnation of the WWII hero?  < /Trumpist >

Let's just say his comments were "inartful." Happens all the time to those who play six dimensional chess.

This is Trump kissing up to the military and then botching it. Just curious ... did he ever gave John McCain credit for the strength he has exhibited after being captured and tortured? Oh, no wait. Those are the ones he doesn't like, aren't they? Those icky ones who get captured. One couldn't be blamed for wondering if Trump would rather that those captured types be in the ranks of the weak ones who "can't handle it."

BTW, are we sure Trump successfully escaped contracting any STDs during his own personal Vietnam? Don't some of those leave you with some kind of lasting brain damage? Hmmmm...

.@realDonaldTrump is the type of guy who watches a war film and thinks he a general. Yet when the fight is on, he cowers in fear.

Trump would have screamed like a little girl and run like hell AWAY from battle...if he had gone into the US military and ever been shot at.  The military would have had to create a whole NEW trauma definition to describe his 'problems'...lol.  PTDSD = Post Traumatic Dumbass Stress Disorder.

While millions of other Americans served and tens of thousands gave their lives during Vietnam, cowardly @realDonaldTrump dodged the draft.

I realize Trump has the best words, but he needs to get them in the right order. He complimented those in the room for being strong. In contrast, he just makes those who are struggling look "weak" in spite of the fact that they were plenty strong enough to put themselves into harm's way for us.

I think a presidential candidate can and should find a different way to make the case for those who suffer from PTSD. These aren't heartfelt convictions for Trump. If they were, he would have put more thought into it. They're a means to rally the voters he needs.

That would be Donald's only experience with foxholes.
"The most terrifying force of death, comes from the hands of Men who wanted to be left Alone. They try, so very hard, to mind their own business and provide for themselves and those they love. They know, that the moment they fight back, their lives as they have lived them, are over. -Alexander Solzhenitsyn

Adding to the Trump quote regarding POWs

It is a huge deal.  Even when Trump is right about something, he is wrong.

He's right that the VA needs fixing.  He's wrong because the money he raised that was supposed to go to Veterans never got there.

He's wrong because he cannot resist in going off on tangents like blaming Vets for their own PTSD.  How crude is that?  He's wrong because John McCain is a sponge who should retire but instead he attacks him for being weak enough to be taken prisoner.

He's wrong because he is no position to criticize anything about ANY of our veterans.  He's never done a dang thing to serve the country in any capacity.

Yeah -- I don't see the problem with it either.  He's certainly said some stupid/disrespectful things before about some who served, but this is just an attempt to make something out of nothing.

It reminds me of someone who might go before a group of MTA train conductors arguing the system needs
some seriously critical repairs and, while we're at it, some of your guys who survived muggings or shootings
on the job just couldn't handle it.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I fail to see how that remark is germane to the topic of the thread. In fact, it looks like one of those disruptive personal attacks.

It isn't sanitary to leave those lying around.
