French President Francois Hollande said Sunday that Paris, a target of devastating terrorism, would guarantee the security of athletes if it hosted the 2024 Olympics.

"We can guarantee the security of the athletes, it is our major priority and a prior condition we must offer to athletes from all over the world, " said Hollande in a speech at a reception for visiting International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach.

France has been repeatedly targeted by Islamic extremists in the last two years, with Paris witnessing the bloody assault on the Charlie Hebdo satirical magazine in January 2015 followed by a rampage by gunmen in the city in November.

:mauslaff: I just read a headline about Kim Kardashian getting robbed by gun point at some luxury place she was staying in Paris.  If that is what he considers "safe" then I'll skip Paris and France.:laughingdog:

Paris is the last place I'd want to visit right now, and it used to be one of Mr. M's and my favorite destinations.

Thinking that intentions equals results is such a quintessentially leftist way of thinking.

The Olympics have become so overblown that it is becoming a huge financial burden for any city that wants to host them.  Most of the major cities of the First World are too smart to do it, so you get either cities that can't handle it, or cities whose image is hurting like Paris.  The problem is that Paris' image is hurting for some very particular reasons that aren't going to go away no matter how much Hollande wishes they might.

Will @EmmanuelMacron’s France be safe enough to host the Olympics this summer? Or is there the danger of a 1972 Munich massacre copycat because of France’s unvetted migration and porous borders?

“Some 2,000 foreign troops and police will be sent to Paris to bolster security for this summer’s Olympic Games as France remains on high alert following attack threats.”
