One either has to believe that he's in it to lose it to Hillary.....or that he really is 'just that stupid'. And as the Trump supporters keep telling everyone....
Trump is just brilliant! 
My take.
Besides being thin skinned, he loves the crowds and cheers. It feeds his ego. He never thought he would get this far in this race. He, though, is used to being in the spotlight for decades and he sees himself more as an entertainer than a serious candidate. He thinks he's onstage at a Wrestling event. If you ever watch the WWE type wrestling and the interviews they have with the wrestlers, that's how Trump is campaigning. And, judging by the reaction of many at FR to his 3 am tweet meltdown, some are starting to wonder if he is in this to be a serious contender for the WH. For a while, his staff was keeping him on message and he was starting to look like a serious candidate. But, his personality wouldn't allow that to last very long.
Now the Oct surprises are coming. If these continue, he will lose handily. Not in a Nixon/Reagan style landslide. But her victory won't be in question. And, to top it off, he has demonstrated an inability to handle them. No he isn't playing 6th dimensional chess or jujitsu nor is this all a secret plan to throw the opposition off guard as more than a few supporters are trying desperately to convince themselves of
