BRUNSWICK, N.Y. – Tamarac Elementary School officials are warning parents about multiple incidents involving strangers taking pictures and attempting to enter the school.

On Monday, a man and a woman were found taking pictures in the school parking lot at dismissal, and the Rensselaer County Sheriff and State Police are now investigating the incident, the Albany Times Union reports.tamaracelementary

“I approached these individuals, who stated they were from out of the country and had never seen buses like this at a school,” Principal Lindsay Morris told in a letter to parents. “I wrote the make, model, and license plate number down of the car, told the man and women they could not take photos and to leave school property.”

Morris also detailed two other incidents involving alleged out-of-towners that occurred Monday.

If the couple was on school property, they can be asked to leave and charged with trespassing if they do not.  If they are on a public sidewalk, the school has no authority to ask them to leave.  As for taking pictures, it is not a crime to take pictures of events happening in public where there is no expectation of privacy.

You are correct. This one's tough since it's a public venue and difficult to determine bad intent of the picture taker. Best you can do is make them move along for loitering or obstructing free movement, that's about it.

That said I call BS. We have this thing called the internets with pics and video. I can maybe understand a reaction upon seeing a bus in person for the first time, but to start snapping pics because of it seems be to a stretch of an excuse.

The best you can do is to notify other schools and districts to be on the lookout for similar "visitors".  They could be scouting out potential targets, so it would behoove these schools to get pics of the strangers if they can, as well as license numbers.
