Bill Clinton acknowledged in a Monday interview that his wife wasn't doing as well in the presidential race as conventional wisdom would suggest she should given his two terms in office and massive popularity with voters.

The former Oval Office occupants cited several factors as he explained his wife's struggle to outrun Donald Trump - the uphill slope she's climbing as she seeks to win a third consecutive term for Democrats in the White House, the 'time we live in,' the 'clamor' of the hourly news cycle.

He also suggested that his wife's gender is working against her.  'You've got to understand, a lot of this is cultural. She's the first woman candidate for a major office,' he told CBS' Charlie Rose.
