A public debate about the true size of Donald Trump’s ‘alt-right’ base doesn’t bother Team Hillary one bit.

“Words have consequences,” Hillary Clinton likes to caution while campaigning against the loose-lipped, insult-hurling Donald Trump. “Words can be misinterpreted.”

But it was the Democratic nominee, generally so careful with her language, whose own inelegant prose seemed to level invective at some 20 percent of the American electorate Friday night, when she plopped them all into a big “basket of deplorables” while addressing supporters at an LGBT fundraiser in New York City.

“You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables, right?” Clinton told the friendly audience fired up to see Barbra Streisand perform at the cavernous Cipriani on Wall Street. “The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic -- you name it.”

We will not stop talking about the bigoted remarks he’s made, or the white supremacists he retweets. He doesn’t deserve a pass on any of those comments.

The Trump campaign keeps this controversy alive at its peril.  Everybody knows the alt-right and its scummy followers are in Trump's camp.  Do they want to continue to draw attention to that fact?

Yes, and no.

The "alt-right" is a festering boil on the body of the GOP, and they tolerate its presence at their peril.

But most of Trump's supporters have nothing to do with that "movement" such as it is, and are instead ordinary Americans fed up with our nation's inability to deal with, much less solve important and lingering problems. Many, if not all of our own TBR members fall into that category.

I don't care for Trump, as I have made plain on many occasions in this space. But I would not casually ascribe to them the motives and ideology of the Fever Swamps, and moreover, Hillary Clinton's despicable denigration of such a huge swath of ordinary Americans is more than fair game for criticism.

Hillary is not going to get the votes of ardent Trump supporters.  But she wants the votes of college-educated whites who want nothing to do with that movement, in any form. 

Why Trump has not publicly disavowed this "movement" as Reagan and HW Bush did, in speeches, is beyond me.  Maybe he knows he can't win without them.

What it does is create a situation where the topic is his dog whistles and his alt-right followers.  As Trump is constitutionally incapable of admitting he has done wrong (in public), he will 'double-down' on this issue against Clinton.
