Priebus: Trump will deliver major immigration address
By Alexander Bolton
Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Reince Priebus announced Sunday that Donald Trump, the GOP’s presidential nominee, will deliver prepared remarks clarifying his views on immigration.
“You’re going to find out from Donald Trump very shortly. He’s going to be giving prepared remarks on this issue, I think very soon,” Priebus told Chuck Todd, host of NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
“His position is going to be tough. His position is going to be fair. His position is going to be humane,” he said.
After meeting with Hispanic leaders in mid-August, Trump suggested that he may soften his position on deporting an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants living in the country.
But he later told CNN’s Anderson Cooper that he had not softened his stance.
“I’ve had people say it’s a hardening, actually,” Trump told Cooper.
Priebus said Trump won’t back away from his core immigration position: building a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.
"He’s going to build and complete the border wall that was set in place in 2006 by Congress. It’s going to be paid for. I believe that he’s going to, when he talks about deportation, he’s going after people who are here that are criminals.”
Trump is looking more closely at the question of what to do about millions of illegal immigrants living in the country.
Last November, he floated the possibility of creating a “deportation force” to roust them from American communities, but many policy experts view this approach as highly impractical. It has also sparked a backlash from Hispanic voters.
Priebus said Sunday that questions about the deportation force are among “the things that Donald Trump is going to answer.”
