Could Donald Trump be one of the lucky ones?

Heading into election day in 1948, most everyone seemed certain that incumbent Democratic President Harry Truman was headed for electoral demise. “We wish Mr. Dewey well without too much enthusiasm,” Reinhold Niebuhr, the acclaimed Protestant theologian and liberal luminary, said of Truman’s Republican opponent in early November, “and look to Mr. Truman’s defeat without too much regret.”
Like much of the country, Niebuhr was in for a surprise. Truman defied steep odds to win a full term as president. When he arrived back in Washington, D.C., after the election he was greeted by a large banner commissioned by the Washington Post: “MR. PRESIDENT, WE ARE READY TO EAT CROW WHENEVER YOU WANT TO SERVE IT.”
