Rush Limbaugh: Trump’s Supporters Are Smart Enough to Not Care That He Lied to Them and Used Them

This is the same Rush Limbaugh whose signature quote used to be: "Character matters; leadership descends from character."

It is really hard to quantify how far the quality of Rush Limbaugh's political analysis has fallen in the last 15 months or so. Rush has always been a little panglossian about the Republican nominee for President, but his analysis of Trump and the 2016 election has come completely untethered from any semblance of reality. Rush's show is basically an audio version of Breitbart.com or Gateway Pundit these days.

Anyway, in the middle of yesterday's discussion of Trump's flip-flop on immigration, Rush went into one of these facially insane asides that have sadly become a daily hallmark of his show:

Well, I suppose in one sense he's pointing out that this is little different from any other candidate -- Run to the right (or left) for the primaries, then make a dash for the center for the general.

So there's nothing particularly new in Trump's doing the same.

What is amusing, however, is that immigration was and is The Issue for a lot of Trump's supporters.  And Trump played them like a fiddle all along; and Trump's opponents were excoriated for their stances on "amnesty." 

And now that Trump has predictably dashed toward the center.... where do those single-issue people go?

Its a cult of personality.

Trump could support partial birth abortion and within a few days they would be praising his brave stance.

6 months ago they would have gone all headhunter on any candidate who even spoke to a black or hispanic group. Now they meekly nod and follow along.

Frankly I'd have a lot more respect for them if they got up on their hind legs and demanded that Trump stick to his original positions no matter how idiotic they are.
