Latest Trump lie: evangelicals didn’t vote for Romney

By Mark Silk  | 15 hours ago

Today Donald Trump smacked a roomful of evangelical pastors in Orlando with this:

Honestly, you did not vote for Romney. Had you voted for Romney, it would have been much closer. You did not vote for Romney. Evangelicals, religion, did not get out and vote. And I don’t know why. Whatever the reason, I’m not sure why.

That’s nonsense. In 2012, white evangelicals constituted 26 percent of of the electorate and voted for Romney over Obama 78 percent to 21 percent. In 2008, they constituted 26 percent of the electorate and voted for McCain over Obama 74 percent to 24 percent. In 2004, they constituted 23 percent of the electorate and voted for Bush over Kerry 78 percent to 21 percent.

In other words, white evangelicals turned out and voted for Romney at rates equal to or greater than they did for the two previous GOP presidential candidates. Who knows if Trump knew he was making a false claim? Certainly he was fibbing for effect when he claimed not to “know why.”

“I’m having a tremendous problem in Utah,” he told the pastors. “Utah is a different place. Is anybody here from Utah? I didn’t think so.” (Laughter)

He knows perfectly well why evangelicals might not have voted for a Mormon. And he’s sucking up to them by implying that the Mormons are against him. Honestly.

More than any figure in modern politics, @realDonaldTrump is obsessed with playing religions against each other.

If this is a lie, a lot of other people lied too because a lot of others say Romney didn't get Evangelicals; Bryan Fischer says Romney even lost because Evangelicals did not show up to vote for him.

Beck Acts as a Bridge Between Romney and Evangelical Christians[

Quote
At the same time, Mr. Beck’s defense of his and Mr. Romney’s shared faith speaks to the long-frayed relationship between evangelical Christians and Mormons and raises the question of whether evangelicals will ultimately put aside religious differences and vote on common conservative issues.

During his special program, Mr. Beck took questions from mostly evangelical Christian listeners, colorfully debunking misperceptions about Mormonism. The “magic underwear” was compared to a skullcap, and Mr. Beck insisted that polygamy was seen as a “perversion” in the modern church.

Presidential candidates clash over religion after evangelical pastor calls Mormonism a 'cult' in run-up to debate on Tuesday
Robert Jeffress was unrepentant on Sunday after portraying Mormonism as a cult and urging Republicans to vote instead for "a Christian candidate". Jeffress is a close ally of Romney's main rival, Rick Perry, the governor of Texas.

Radio's Bryan Fischer Tries Pushing Romney Right

In April, Mitt Romney hired Richard Grenell, an openly gay man, to serve as his campaign's national security spokesman. Within hours, Grenell was being attacked by a Christian radio talk show host named Bryan Fischer, whose Focal Point call-in show reaches more than 1 million listeners a day.

Nine days after Fischer began his on-air attack, Grenell resigned. He had been the only openly gay member of Romney's campaign staff.

The Christian right and Fischer saw Grenell's resignation as a "tremendous victory," says New Yorker staff writer Jane Mayer.

"[Bryan Fischer] feels he and what he calls the 'pro-family' movement managed to hound Romney into pushing an openly gay member of his campaign out because of the fact that he was gay," says Mayer. "So they feel that they've really triumphed on this one."

White evangelicals put Barack Obama back in the White House

So, indeed, did Evangelicals support Romney?  Yes, but not enough of them.  At the same time, one can say Evangelicals not voting for Romney lost the election per Bryan Fischer.

Quote
Whether Mormonism played a role, or whether other factors were at work, over six million evangelicals found a way to vote for a self-identified Christian who nevertheless believes in infanticide and sodomy-based marriage. If just 25% of these evangelicals had voted for Gov. Romney instead, Romney would have won the popular vote by over 350,000 votes (59.51 million to 59.16 million), and likely would have won the election to boot.

Thus it's no exaggeration to say that white evangelicals put Barack Obama back in the White House.

Forget for a moment the lie he said about evangelicals not voting for Romney and look at his behind the headlines  insult of Mormons and the State of Utah. How is that going to win him the reddest state in the Union?   Hope he has enjoyed himself, because it is all downhill from here, and he's taking his supporters with him. I think we’re looking at a Walter Mondale-level blowout.

You're sure a Trumpkin, what with the "many people say" meme.  Mimicking your boss is the highest form of flattery.

Facts are facts, pal, but they obviously don't matter to Trumpkins.  All that matters is that "other people lied too."

Cultic behavior.

An extinction level event unless the GOP abandons this race and concentrates on saving the downticket races.

Evangelicals really supported Romney!  :silly:

There was no Mormon prejudice factor in 2008.    It is a complete lie by Trump. Look it up.

Romney got more of the white evangelical Protestant vote than McCain did.  Nearly eight-in-ten white evangelical Protestants voted for Romney (79%), compared with 20% who backed Obama. Romney received as much support from evangelical voters as George W. Bush did in 2004 (79%) and more support from evangelicals than McCain did in 2008 (73%).
