Kane, 50, has been charged with perjury, obstruction, official oppression, and other crimes.

Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele and his team of prosecutors say Kane illegally leaked secret grand jury information to embarrass a political foe, and later lied about it under oath.

She has pleaded not guilty, and has portrayed the case as a vindictive prosecution fueled by a group of men who wanted to get back at her for exposing the sharing of pornographic emails by prosecutors, judges and defense lawyers on state email servers.

Last week, Kane filed a last-minute motion to the state Supreme Court asking to have the charges against her dismissed. The court denied her motion Friday, clearing the way for the trial.

Kane, a Democrat, is in the final year of her first term in office. She is not seeking a second term.

HARRISBURG — Attorney General Kathleen Kane's office will pay $150,000 to settle an ex-employee's whistleblower lawsuit that claimed he was wrongfully terminated and defamed after recommending she fire one of her top lieutenants over sexual harassment allegations.

The settlement pushes taxpayer costs to at least $586,285 related to a host of civil lawsuits from former and current public employees who claim Kane slandered them, wrongfully fired them or both in a campaign of retaliation for perceived disloyalty.

The seven-page settlement, which the agency released upon request from media, states the office will pay George Moore, a former human resources analyst, $72,221 for lost wages between June 24, 2014, and Sept. 7, 2015. Those dates coincide with when Moore was fired and when he got a new job with the state Department of Human Services.

The attorney general's office will pay another $60,000 to cover Moore's legal fees while also deducting $4,419 to reimburse taxpayers for the unemployment compensation Moore received while jobless.  ...

HARRISBURG — Three weeks before she is to go on trial on perjury charges, Attorney General Kathleen Kane's staff has given a job interview to the son of a key prosecution witness against her.

Matthew Peifer, a 29-year-old son of witness David Peifer, who was granted immunity by Montgomery County prosecutors to testify about Kane's alleged role in leaking grand jury secrets, was interviewed Tuesday in the agency's Norristown office. The job the younger Peifer applied for was in the internet child pornography unit run by Kane's identical twin, Ellen Granahan.

Prosecutors and a government ethics scholar not associated with Kane's criminal case say the timing of the job interview raises questions about undue influence with Kane's criminal case.

"If I was prosecuting this case, I would be very concerned," Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli said. "This whole thing is incestuous with nepotism … and now it's flowing into the criminal case."  ...
