A new Arizona poll gives Hillary Clinton a 45 percent to 42 percent lead over Donald Trump in a four-way presidential race that includes Libertarian Gary Johnson and Green Party candidate Jill Stein.
Phoenix-based OH Predictive Insights surveyed 996 likely voters on August 1.
Johnson gets 4 percent. Stein grabs 1 percent and 8 percent are undecided.
OH pollster Mike Noble said Trump should be winning Arizona, which has gone for the GOP in every presidential race since 1948 except 1996.
Noble said Trump’s fight with the parents of late U.S. Army Capt. Humayun Khan, a Muslim-American who died in Iraq in 2004, may be hurting the real estate developer turned GOP nominee.
Khan’s parents, also Muslims, spoke at the Democratic National Convention and scolded Trump over his calls to temporarily restricting Muslims entering the U.S. after terrorism attacks.
Trump questioned why Khan’s mother didn’t speak at the DNC.
Clinton has seen a bump in her polling numbers after the Democratic convention.
She is the first woman to the presidential nominee of a major political party. That and Trump’s negatives with women voters and Hispanics may help drive the unexpected Arizona poll numbers.
Trump’s hard-line immigration stances have made him unpopular with many Hispanics.
Trump has also been battling again with U.S. Sen. John McCain R-Ariz. McCain criticized Trump for his comments about Khan’s parents.
Trump said today he was not endorsing McCain or House Speaker Paul Ryan in their upcoming GOP primaries.
Trump faulted McCain for his handling of problems the Veterans Administration hospitals.
He’s also refused to back down on Khan controversy.
