Donald Trump to Father of Fallen Soldier: 'I’ve Made a Lot of Sacrifices'

By STEVE TURNHAM Jul 30, 2016, 12:38 PM ET

In his first response to a searing charge from bereaved Army father Khizr Khan that he’d “sacrificed nothing” for his country, Donald Trump claimed that he had in fact sacrificed by employing “thousands and thousands of people.” He also suggested that Khan’s wife didn’t speak because she was forbidden to as a Muslim and questioned whether Khan’s words were his own.

“Who wrote that? Did Hillary's script writers write it?” Trump said in an interview with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos. “I think I've made a lot of sacrifices. I work very, very hard.”

On the last night of the Democratic National Convention on Thursday, Gold Star father Khizr Khan, his wife Ghazala by his side, recounted to the crowd how his son was killed in 2004 by a car bomb in Iraq.

Khan also chastised Trump for seeking to ban Muslims from entering the country, saying that his son, U.S. Army Capt. Humayun Khan, would not have been able to serve under a Trump presidency.

“Go look at the graves of brave patriots who died defending the United States of America,” Khan said, addressing Trump. “You will see all faiths, genders and ethnicities. You have sacrificed nothing and no one.”

Trump appeared to try to brush the speech aside, saying that Khan “was, you know, very emotional and probably looked like a nice guy to me.”

Trump also said, “If you look at his wife, she was standing there. She had nothing to say. She probably, maybe she wasn't allowed to have anything to say. You tell me.”

Pressed by Stephanopoulos to name the sacrifices he’d made for his country, Trump said: “I think I've made a lot of sacrifices. I work very, very hard. I've created thousands and thousands of jobs, tens of thousands of jobs, built great structures. I've had tremendous success. I think I've done a lot.”

Trump also cited his work on behalf of veterans, including helping to build a Vietnam War memorial in Manhattan, and raising “millions of dollars” for vets.

Everything he says supports the position that he is a stalking horse for Hillary.
Character still matters.  It always matters.

I wear a mask as an exercise in liberty and love for others.  To see it as an infringement of liberty is to entirely miss the point.  Be kind.

I would think Trump's intemperate comment here would be highly damaging to his candidacy.

But what do I know? He's been saying this crap all along and look where we are.

You have to remember, this is a guy who has absolutely no problem losing as long as he can build his brand. He loves to fail if the failure is downside protected in a way that builds his brand. One can even surmise that he builds failure into his bigger business plan so he can achieve a better branding result. This can be seen in his many, many, many ventures that were almost nothing more than publicity stunts to build the Trump brand, from his magazine, to vodka, to Trump the Game, to his football league, and so on and so on. All were losing prospects but they built his brand. Even his other failed presidential run that was obviously pointless other than brand building.

One can't look at Trump as a man, but as a brand. Don't take it from me, it is right out of The Art of the Deal in the chapters about publicity and playing to the downside.

It is why he surrounds himself with Yes people when it comes to his close staff, because if someone challenges him, they may not be seeing the bigger branding picture he is working towards. He wants people to tell him how glorious and wonderful he is.

One thing we can count on, Trump is about the Trump Brand, not America First or Nationalism or any civic pride (his own history of business choices show this well).

The question is (again referring to The Art of the Deal) what downside is he playing to? What is he really setting up?

You would think so but his supporters happily follow the wild swings of his schizophrenic campaign.

From ban all muslims to a muslim prayer at the convention to hate these muslims who have made the ultimate sacrifice but don't like Trump.

Excellent point (of course).

It's never been about America.  It's always been about the Trump brand.

And he told us so in his ghost-written book...

So very similar to the phony candidate who ran first in 2008 and fooled so many gullible people............   **nononono*

That's actually pretty normal for him. He eats like crap. Check out this old Vanity Fair interview. According to Ivana, when he gets depressed, he'll lock himself in his room and gorge on junk food.

Yet he's roughly 50/50 with Hillary. Its time to admit people just aren't paying attention and we are in some deep, deep trouble.

What's he talking about? His wives have not been allowed to have anything to say either. Where's Melania? Where's Melania? Where's Marla? Where's Ivana? *crickets*
America needs no words from me to see how your decision in Roe v. Wade has deformed a great nation. The so-called right to abortion has pitted mothers against their children and women against men. Human rights are not a privilege conferred by government. They are every human being's entitlement by virtue of his humanity. The right to life does not depend, and must not be declared to be contingent, on the pleasure of anyone else, not even a parent or a sovereign. -Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta

I completely believe Trump was right when he said that he could shoot people dead and his followers wouldn't care.

We're pretty close to having the scenario be a reality, aren't we?

They literally don't care that he doesn't mean a thing he's campaigning on and is as deceptive as any candidate in history.

They just don't care what he says or does.

It's so very disturbing, because I expect that of leftists, but I have never thought that anyone with a single conservative value would be so blind.

The hits just keep on coming.  I'm becoming more convinced by the day he has no intention of becoming President.  These gaffes have to be intentional.. even Trump can't be this stupid.

His whole "high class" veneer is ultra-thin. He is the personification of "keeping up with the Jonses (Howells)". It's all a facade like the family with the new house and car that can't afford anything else. It's all about keeping up appearances.

Didn't he apply for something like 5 military deferments?

I remember reading that 1 of his wives wanted to buy some expensive antique furniture but Donald had cheaper reproductions made and then he told everyone they were the real deal.

He does act like 'new money' doesn't he? The ones with the biggest brand labels on their purses, gold plated everything, and they always tell you about it.
