An Unmitigated Disaster
« on: July 27, 2016, 02:26:13 pm »
By: Thomas Sowell

Quote
Republican party leaders may have worried that Donald Trump would not only lose the general election for the presidency, but would so poison the image of the party as to cause Republican candidates for Congress and for state and local offices to also lose. Now they seem to be trying to patch things up, in order to present an image of unity before the general elections this fall.

Regardless of how that attempt at patching up an image turns out, Trump's candidacy could be not only a current political setback for Republicans, but an enduring affliction in future elections....

It rarely pays to disagree with Sowell. Nevertheless, it's way too early to feel all this doom and gloom. He reads like George Will in this case. Since it's unlikely that Trump or clinton will fail to reach 270 electoral votes, why try to predict a Trump disaster?

No one knows what Trump would do in any hypothetical circumstance. Likely,Trump doesn't know. It's hard to believe he could be worse for the good guys than obama who worked with purpose to make sure the good guys felt the convex side of the shovel with every decision. Trump might do some things good for American citizens occasionally, maybe by accident.

Most DC denizens these days say and do things every day that harm American citizens.

The thing that Sowell has joined most pundits in explaining, or not explaining, is that the composite DC "leader" made Trump possible, gave us Trump as a gift and made it so vast numbers of American people will grab for someone, anyone, who claims to be apolitical. Give us a President who will do the occasional right thing, even if he stumbles into it.

At least Sowell didn't say clinton is to be preferred.

The GOP is either whistling past the graveyard or willfully replacing conservatives with a more liberal and compliant base.

It's the first. They're really not smart enough to manage the second.

It's hard to think of a conservative opinion leader more respected than Thomas Sowell.   This is an essential read,  and a devastating critique of the damage Trump will do to the nation, and to conservatism.

And it's important to keep in mind that Sowell's being more than a crank.  He rejects the Trumpsters' cynical argument that, now that the conventions are over,  there's nothing left to do but to vote Trump to prevent Hillary.   He calls for a third party vote, in hopes of throwing the election to the House.

Quote
What was once feared most by the Republican establishment -- a third party candidate for President -- may represent the only slim chance for saving this country from a catastrophic administration in an age of proliferating nuclear weapons.

If a third party candidate could divide the vote enough to prevent anyone from getting an electoral college majority, that would throw the election into the House of Representatives, where any semblance of sanity could produce a better president than these two.

This is, as Sowell suggests, an existential threat, folks.   Voices like his, and George Will's, deserve to be listened to by thinking conservatives.

There is still much we can do to ward off the coming disaster.   I urge all to consider the conservative case for liberty-centric, Constitutional government represented by Gary Johnson and Bill Weld.
