(Hint to all the wonderful friends on this thread: Cruz lost the nomination. Donald Trump just accepted the nomination, and therefore Ted Cruz is mathematically eliminated as the 2016 Republican nominee for president. Don't bother thanking me for cluing you folks in)

So did I miss it or did he not mention the Constitution, limited government, maximizing individual liberty, staying true to values, or any of the fundamental Conservative principles?

Oh I forgot, those came up in the speech last night- they were booed.

Trump didn't mention any of those things and never got around to "outlining his plan for America" like he promised to do at the beginning of that whatever it was last night!

I had to teach an evening class,  and missed most of last night's reality show.  But I saw enough of Trump's speech,  yelling and dumbed down to the fifth-grade level of most of his supporters,  to conclude that he's channeling Mussolini and pitching a cult of personality.  Yes, he shouted, He, and only He, will make the trains run on time.

Are we as Americans this weak-minded to fail to see how this blowhard is exploiting us?   We're the greatest nation on earth, yet apparently we're as close as Italy in the twenties and Germany in the thirties to sacrificing our Constitution to this narcotic balm.

Reagan's spinning in his grave.  So is Goldwater, so is Lincoln.

Give me four years of Clinton to this dangerous fool.   It is only through the defeat of Trumpism that liberty-centric conservatism can rise again.   Ted Cruz is right - vote your conscience.   George Will is right - all that's left to do now is work to bury Trump and LIVE to fight another day.

Anybody think they'd ever hear this kind of authoritarianism at a REPUBLICAN Convention?  Even Hillary won't go this far! 

The other thing about all of Trump's fantasies:  never once indicated how he's going to pay for them.  It won't come from entitlements; he's not going to touch them.

I'm afraid, though, that the rubes bought it hook, line, and sinker.  Half the respondents to a CNN poll said it was a "positive" speech.

This was pure Buchaninism.  There was nothing positive about it.

Right on, AbaraXas.   I didn't recognize the GOP on display this week.   What a shameful display of ignorance, fear and hubris. 

The GOP has forgotten what made it honorable and worthy of emulation and support.

I used to wonder why, even in Presidential elections,  barely more than half of those eligible bothered to vote.  What were those other half concerned with, and what would happen if someone could motivate them to vote?

I guess we know now.   We've survived 200 years, it appears, by not encouraging the fools.   But now the fools have been roused awake.   

Let's not kid ourselves.  IMO,  voting for "none of the above" isn't an option.   If there's a clear and present danger, it must be confronted and defeated, by any means necessary.

Just dont have the emotional energy to both watch the speeches and see our community split.  From FR and now into two camps here.

I think I am the only Trump realist left on the site.  Trump and his supporters have now pushed some budding realists ( healthy) or even maybes into Nevers.

Conventions are supposed to do the opposite.

Perhaps, in this bizzarro world, Hillary will push some nevers into being realists......

Here's my Trump 'realist':

 Years ago when I was hospitalized for pneumonia, and could barely breathe a teacup full of air, I left the room. I was standing on/in cloud and I saw Jesus, literally. To make a short story shorter, He told me "Go back, it is not yet your time.", and I was back in the room. In 12 hours I had coughed up so much rubbery junk I could breathe again, and was let out the next day. The night before they were going to put me on a respirator in the morning.

I know there is a 'there', there. I know I will have to account for my actions and decisions, good and bad, even though I am forgiven for the latter. I cannot in good conscience vote for either the GOP or Democrat candidate for president. No "reality" of this life will ever compete with eternity, and there is nothing here that can hurt for as long. Voting for a lesser evil just means you get more evil, in smaller doses, but evil just the same.

It's his followers and what they will continue to sow onto society.  IMO, his supporters are way worse than any Clinton supporters.  I have seen some vile tings by Clinton supporters, but nothing near as vile, rude, mean spirited, outright insulting and threatening, as I have with Trump supporters.  In fact, with the few Clinton supporters I've dealt with, they are just dumb....well, ignorant and dumb.  But they aren't so mind warped as to go out of their ever living minds as to expect, demand and threaten those that don't comply with Yes We Cankles.  Those who support Cheetoh Messiah...are a completely different zombie.  Their influence on society, their hatred, anger, absolute mind washing...wll do more damage to our society, than any of Her Thighness supporters will.  Just my $.02

I listened to all I could endure of the speech. I was first distracted by the delivery. He obviously did not do the work to disguise the fact that he was reading. Then I got distracted by the yelling. Most politicians do this. They think that volume = passion and intensity.

All along, I have waited/hoped for Trump to  give me a reason. July 5 did move me to Trump realism; but Trump had nothing to do with that.

I thought July 22 might give me something to solidify that. Perhaps a line or two of humility. Perhaps just a tad bit less egocentric. Perhaps a solid and detailed plan on spending. Perhaps a specific condemnation of the Republican controlled Congress (McConnell / Ryan).  I could go on.

I'll be listening and reading reports to see what I missed. I do want to keep an open mind.

I'm still in the Trump realist camp too.  Desperately wishing I could find something about Trump to be for, instead of just being against Hillary.  Last night's speech didn't help.  Nothing truly conservative about it.  He's just gonna be "our" big government guy.  Or at least so he says.  Since I trust him about as much as warm roadside food truck sushi, I can't say I have a clue as to what he's really gonna do if/when he gets to DC
