My Personal Observation:

Ted Cruz started his speech by congratulating Trump for his nomination.

He then spoke movingly about the daughter of one of the slain police officers in Dallas, thanking and praising law enforcement officers and personnel in this country.

He then went on to remind the crowd of what's at stake -- freedom, liberty, the judiciary the principles upon which this country was founded.

He contrasted what the country truly needs today against the massive big government, freedom-stifling and corrupt policies of Obama, Clinton and the Democrats.

All the above were greeted with applause.

He was applauded even more as he encouraged the crowd not to stay home this November seeing what's at stake, telling them to vote for the conservative candidates
running this year.

As the speech moved on and the crowd realized that there would be no formal endorsement, you could hear scattered jeers from the crowd.

He then thanked the crowd and it was over .. with the camera panning to --- Donald Trump.

A few minutes later, it was time for the speech of -- Eric Trump.

As did Melania's stolen speech turned out to be the biggest news story the next day, so will Cruz's "Vote your Conscience - Vote Liberty" speech be tomorrow. It very well may overshadow the speech by Pence.

Thank You Ted Cruz for staying faithful. And I will be voting my conscience for president and then down ticket.

He just created a #NeverCruz movement and ensured he will never have a shot at winning a GOP nomination in the future. Mr Trump quite graciously offered him a key speaking slot and the chance to keep his pledge to support the nominee. Cruz, ungraciously, failed to keep his word. Two effects....in the short run this helps Trump significantly with Republicans very few of whom can stand Cruz, particularly now that he's demonstrated his lack of courage and class.

Second, in the long term, you can simply take Cruz out of the 2020 equation as he will now be shunned by most voters in the GOP. The hard core Cruzies will stay with him, but that 10% isn't enough to get him anywhere significant. Teds pettiness has finally caught up to him, and exposed his selfish character. Sad, really.

I hope Trump is livid!

Doubtful, as it was pretty much what he likely expected from Ted. There is a reason he's the most hated Senator in the GOP, and it ain't because of his conservatism. It's his lack of character and self inflated ego.

remaining true to your principles should be rule #1.

If people did that, the grifters like Trump and liars and con-men like McConnell would never stay in office very long

It's because he is not malleable and compromising like Trump.

Trump played dirty with Cruz, I don't begrudge Cruz on that.

But Cruz's campaign was dirty, towards Doctor Carson, the mailings and all of that. That can't be denied either.

Trump called Carson "psycho like a child molester" on national live television in a debate while Carson was riding high in the polls, this crippled the Carson campaign for good. It never recovered from the nasty, dirty tactics of the demon Trump.

Ted Cruz has been above that, and was, the whole time. The accusations against Ted Cruz were wholly without merit.

Ed Morrissey of HotAir.Com observes:

Had Cruz never mentioned voting at all, he likely would have finished up without provoking the response. In this case, though, “vote your conscience” was doubly provocative given the sturm und drang the last two days over Rules Committee reports. Instead, he made his non-endorsement a little too specific, and the delegates turned on him.

It’s too bad, because this was a good speech, and delivered in particularly good form. Cruz dispensed with the preaching style that he had adopted during the campaign, and went back to his normal rhetorical style. It was effective, right up until he got “too clever by half,” as Scarborough said.

[...]

Newt Gingrich, who followed shortly afterward, skewered Cruz a bit by claiming to divine what he meant by “vote your conscience.” Gingrich told the crowd that Cruz had said that in the context of protecting the Constitution, and since Hillary Clinton will shred it as president, then the only way to “vote your conscience” is for “the Trump-Pence ticket,”  QED

Other than the Iowa Caucus, where the Cruz campaign actually repeated a CNN report insinuating that Carson might drop out ( for which Cruz apologized), where has Cruz been dirty towards Carson?

Is this worse than Trump comparing Carson to a child molester?

The pathetic, childish display of what the GOP has evidently become illustrates why, tomorrow, I will no longer be a member of the Republican Party.

The Iowa Caucuses also had Trump people telling others that Ted was not eligible and that Rubio's people also mentioned the CNN report on Carson in some precincts.

The pathetic, childish display of what the GOP has evidently become illustrates why, tomorrow, I will no longer be a member of the Republican Party.

Here's how CNN see's it:

http://www.cnn.com/2016/07/20/politics/ted-cruz-republican-convention-moment/

EXCERPT:

Ted Cruz sensationally withheld an endorsement of Donald Trump at the Republican National Convention on Wednesday, earning a chorus of boos from the floor before he was upstaged in a power play by the GOP nominee himself.

In a dramatic development, as Cruz wrapped up his speech, Trump suddenly appeared in the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland. He walked to join his family in a VIP area and flashed a thumbs-up -- a gesture that transmitted clear anger at the Texas senator's behavior.

Cruz, his party's runner-up, uttered Trump's name just once -- to congratulate him -- and instead pitched the ideological brand of conservatism that endears him to the GOP's base.

"I congratulate Donald Trump on winning the nomination last night," Cruz said. "And like each of you, I want to see the principles that our party believes prevail in November."

But as it was clear Cruz was going to end his speech without endorsing Trump, delegates began to boo and some chanted "We want Trump!"

"Don't stay in home in November," Cruz said toward the end of his otherwise very well-received speech. "Stand and speak and vote your conscience."

As delegates began to protest, Sen. Cruz's wife, Heidi Cruz, was heckled by Trump supporters shouting "Goldman Sachs!" and escorted out by security. Heidi Cruz, who is an employee of Goldman Sachs, declined to answer questions from reporters, saying, "I don't talk to the media, thanks."

Principles? I suppose if "me first" is a principle.

Here's the thing. Strongly pro Trump voters may not make up a majority of the party, but we are easily the largest faction. Ted Cruz essentially ended his hopes of winning a party nomination in the future as he has lost all of those votes. Not smart, and definitely not principled. Principled men like Reagan work to unite the party, not divide it. Reagan did the right thing in the same situation in 1976. Cruz did the wrong thing.
