@LonestarDream ............. please downsize that photo.  It's scaring me!  :dx1:

Forgot how.  height ?  width?

Either should work.

Hello, all.

I have been reading with interest for the past several hours the postings that I have missed while I've been on vacation. I am presently in Quebec, Canada and trying valiantly to catch up via the Internet on some of the goings on during the Republican convention.

I must say that reading these threads has been altogether depressing, and at times plainly shocking to witness the level to which our discourse has sunk, especially with regard to the personalization of comments directed toward members of this group by other members.

Clearly, Donald Trump's victory over his electoral rivals for the Republican nomination has created a great deal of acrimony not only among members of TBR but among the Republican electorate in general.

I have made no secret about my disdain for Mr. Trump. I find his boorish behavior, his lack of intellectualism, his poor character and lack of policy knowledge to be substantial reasons not to support him in the upcoming election.

Nonetheless, I find the prospect of a president Hillary Clinton to be positively frightening, to the extent that I might actually consider voting for Mr. Trump in the end. I take no pleasure in this, and neither should any of his supporters that the only reason some of us might in the end pull a lever for him is because the alternative is so horrifying.

I remain unconvinced that a Trump presidency would not be nearly as horrifying. But the one reason, the one thing that might tip the balance for me in the end is the Supreme Court.  In truth, I have no idea what Trump would do if provided the opportunity to nominate a justice to the court. Neither does anyone else. That is as frightening as anything else about the man, who remains a cipher in terms of his actual beliefs, assuming he has any.

In any event, I am going to return to enjoying my 25th wedding anniversary vacation with my lovely wife, and enjoy some fine food and beverages here in Quebec and watch the convention tonight - unfortunately on CNN - the only news station we can get here, which is a hoot and a half but that's another story...

I am especially looking forward to watching the speech from the man who should've been the GOP nominee by all rights, Ted Cruz.  I expect from him a speech full of substance and not rancor.  And no endorsement, either.

Good post.

If you can vote for Trump and - in the end - want to vote for Trump because you want to try and salvage the SCOTUS, I understand.

I will never vote for Trump because of the damage he is likely to do to the country beyond the SCOTUS. And, when it comes to the SCOTUS, I firmly believe we'll get more Justice Kennedys out of this fool than we would get Scalias. So, it's a lost cause anyway.

So, in the end, I think there are enough people that simply won't vote for Trump that he will lose anyway. Hillary will win. We'll get a whole bunch of Kagans on the SCOTUS, but at least when the country gets damaged further, people will point at Hillary and the dems and say, "They did it!" rather than at the GOP nominee.

Me, I'll be able to say - in good conscience - "Don't blame me. I didn't vote for either of those gasbags."
How to lose credibility while posting:
1. Trump is never wrong.
2. Default to the most puerile emoticon you can find. This is especially useful when you can't win an argument on merits.
3. Be falsely ingratiating, completely but politely dismissive without talking to the points, and bring up Hillary whenever the conversation is really about conservatism.
4. When all else fails, remember rule #1 and #2. Emoticons are like the poor man's tweet!

Is the "official" thread locked to everyone or just me?  There's a schedule listed there that I had a question on.

Trump picked Pence, who is not Christie .

Trump's advisors pushed him to pick Pence, he didn't want to.

Peer pressure can be good, sometimes.  Read that his kids were pining for Pence.

His pick for Treasury is a left-wing donor, banker, globalist
Yeah, I saw that. I know exactly who Steve Mnuchin is. Bleccccch.

But then again there is only one main source for that story. There is no saying for sure who he would pick in the end.

We have no good choices left. The only question is: do we take the fast boat or the slow boat to purgatory? The benefit of the slow boat is we have a chance to turn around before we make it all the way to Hell.

I might still vote "none of the above". I don't honestly know what I'm going to do, at least at this point. Lord help me: I'm keeping my mind open to the possibility of voting for a conniving bastard as opposed to The Pantsuit Beast.

And I am certainly not going to fault anybody here for making up their own mind. We all need to do that, and live with it.
"The most terrifying force of death, comes from the hands of Men who wanted to be left Alone. They try, so very hard, to mind their own business and provide for themselves and those they love. They resist every impulse to fight back, knowing the forced and permanent change of life that will come from it. They know, that the moment they fight back, their lives as they have lived them, are over. -Alexander Solzhenitsyn

LOL.  I just noticed Cruz wasn't listed on the schedule.  Wondered if he got bumped or not on during prime time?

The local radio guy just suggested that Cruz wouldn't even make it on the stage tonight.  Said Trump won't allow it to happen.  He (the radio host) seems to lean left so he's probably wrong.

We'll see.

None of us are any worse off for it.  The adults can handle criticism.

Anyone can handle your criticism @Just_Victor.  But you and yours have been at it for so long, saying the same thing over and over and over and over again that it's all just annoying...like clutter on the floor.

Pro-Trump posters have offered to engage in a conversation about the importance of voting and how not proactively voting for the Republican ticket can ultimately help elect she who shall not be named.  And if you remember, this site almost ran out of fainting couches after that suggestion.

I'll return now to the official convention thread and get out of your way so you can carry on.  I'd love for you to join us.  But please note:  We're going to be dancing the night away---so  take care not to drop any clutter on the floor.

You're optimistic, aren't you? I work in academe. Trust me - they will find a way to blame the conservatives/Republicans no matter what.

You have no idea what Trump has done to my work relationships. I had to flat-out tell my employees that there will be no political conversations at work, period. There's no defending Trump to them, even if I were inclined to defend him (which I'm not). And of course they conflate Trump with the Republican Party now, so I can't say I'm a Republican anymore. And they would come in, just laughing uproariously about whatever absurdity had vomited out of Trump's mouth the previous night, despite the fact that their own candidate is equally as despicable. I feel like Charlton Heston in Planet of the Apes:
