I'm sure I'm well younger than you, but I completely agree.
I started cynical in the past decade more and more. Maybe it was because I was so involved in politics early on But all that made my cynical as I saw how it worked.

To me, Trump is the culmination of this- it is the manipulation of the masses to give the government more and more power.

Worse, I see this as a big step towards an authoritarian Republican party that cares more about using the hammer of the government to force their way than to actually limit government and maximize individual freedom. ...the party has lost me as a volunteer, donor, and fighter for them.

Your above comments are exactly mine.  I gave ten years of service to our county and state party, did it for free, and now I am 83, so way older than you.  The party has also lost me as a volunteer, donor, and fighter for them, just as you said.

I know Trump is dangerous, more dangerous than Clinton, and if he wins, I will live my life without knowing what he is doing.  Do not plan to follow what he does.  I will live my life well regardless of whether it is him or her.

Except it's not just an emotional tantrum. Believe me, I've had emotional tantrums, so I know what I'm talking about.

We have one thing in common: our mutual dislike of Hillary Clinton. The difference is that your side of the argument is willing to support literally any person as the Republican nominee without regard to his qualifications, and are willing to manufacture their own qualifications. Read the stuff Mechanicos posts, for example: even a sane Trump supporter can't defend it.

We on this side of the argument, on the other hand, aren't willing to jump out of the frying pan that is Clinton and into the fire that is Donald Trump. I mean, the dirt both we and the Clinton campaign (as much as we despise them) have on Trump, most of it isn't distortion, manipulation or anything else—it's things he's saying right in his Twitter feed and right in front of the cameras, for the whole world to see. Not only that, but it's what his supporters are saying about silencing opponents. Most of us who could be classified as "neverTrump" believe that not only do you have to simply beat Clinton, but the guy (or gal) we're voting for has to be better than both Clinton and Barack Obama. I have a hard time thinking that Donald Trump is any better, and it shouldn't be hard to see why—and for this reason we're very discouraged at the thought that either Trump or Clinton, barring some miraculous come-from-behind surge from Gary Johnson, is going to be our next President, when several saner candidates were able and willing.

aligncare, you live in New York. You've seen this state's politics: the corruption runs rampant, and the prosecutions are piling up faster than orders at the Carnegie Deli on Hanukkah. You should know that nothing good can come out of this state politically. Donald Trump was part of this system: he's been friendly with the Clintons, appeared with them numerous times, and of course the pay-for-play donations are public record.
