Pakistani Social Media Star Allegedly Strangled to Death by Brother in 'Honor Killing': Reports

By Blake Bakkila  @bcbakkila 07/16/2016 AT 03:50 PM EDT

Pakistani social media celebrity Qandeel Baloch has died, according to reports. Police and her family are saying her brother strangled her in her sleep, according to multiple outlets.

Police say that Baloch's body was found in her family home on Saturday, according Reuters. The Associated Press and multiple other outlets have said that her brother, Waseem Azeem, allegedly killed his sister in what is being called an "honor killing." Hundreds of Pakistani women who "[violate] conservative norms" are killed by family members each year in these types of killings as punishment, according to the AP.

Police tell Reuters that they are currently looking to Azeem, who has disappeared.

"[Waseem] had serious reservations regarding her pictures being circulated on social media," Baloch's father, Muhammad Azeem told reporters in Multan, according to Reuters. "He escaped after strangling Qandeel."

Her father also told local reporters that he thought his daughter was "brave."

While Baloch was revered by many liberals, but Muslim conservatives took extreme offense when she posted pictures of herself with a prominent Muslim cleric, according to the AP.

Some here argue that islam is solely a religion, due the full respect and protection, as only a religion (of peace, of course).

Does that mean if the family was living in the US, it would be okay for her brother to kill her, under Sharia Law and be protected by "religious freedom?"

A Pakistani model who became a sensation over racy social media selfies was likely strangled by her brother, police said Saturday, in what is being described as an honor killing.

Qandeel Baloch, who is in her late 20s or early 30s, was found dead in her home near the ancient city of Multan on Friday night, local police chief Azhar Akram told reporters.

He said her brother, who has gone missing, is a suspect.

"An autopsy is happening," Akram added, "but we suspect strangulation."

Her parents also confirmed to authorities that one of her six brothers was behind her death, police spokeswoman Nabila Ghazanfar told The Associated Press.

Baloch was known for her popular and provocative selfie videos, in which she spoke openly about her sexuality — a taboo subject in the conservative Islamic Republic of Pakistan. She promised to strip for the Pakistan cricket team captain if he won a match against India.

She also bared her cleavage in selfies with a prominent Muslim cleric while sharing a couch with him. The uproar over those images caused a national media ruckus, prompting her to ask the Interior Ministry for her own security, which was denied.
