Gingrich: I'd feel 'compelled' to be Trump's VP if asked

Newt Gingrich said Thursday evening that he'd be "compelled to serve the country" if GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump asked him to be his running mate.
 
"If Trump offers the position and is serious about it, which I think he would be after our conversations, [my wife] Callista and I would feel compelled to serve the country," the former Speaker said on Fox News' "On the Record."
 
"I think that we are at a crossroads in American history, frankly captured in part by what happened over the last few days," he added. "We're either going to clean up Washington or Washington is going to corrupt the whole country."
 
Gingrich praised the businessman as a "remarkable figure" and a "historic" presidential candidate.
 
Gingrich said "five or six people are being vetted" for VP, indicating he was among them. He also said Trump will likely make a final decision next week and announce it "Thursday or Friday so they dominate the weekend news going into the convention."
 
Speculation over whom Trump and Hillary Clinton, the presumptive Democratic nominee, will pick as their running mates is heating up ahead of the GOP and Democratic conventions later this month.
 
Gingrich spoke at Trump's rally Wednesday night in Cincinnati and is among several potential VP picks appearing with the candidate at events this week, though some — most notably Sen. Bob Corker (Tenn.) — have said they're not interested in the job.
 
Trump, who this week said Gingrich would be involved in his administration "in one form or another," is slated to campaign Friday with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie in Miami.
 
"I think it'd be very, very hard for Callista and me not to find a way to serve the country," Gingrich said Thursday.

After Trump's winking admission that he "might" not actually accept the Presidency, you know types like Newt who are thirsty for power will hitch their wagons to Trump knowing that that's the only way they'll have any shot at the Oval Office.

I'm not at all surprised Newt would accept.....his great fondness for this country and remarkable understanding of it's history, both political and historical, not to mention his work with Congress to get things done......he'd be a great asset to Trump. Though I've heard said some think he'd do better as Chief of Staff.....I think he's perhaps better suited at negotiating tables as VP.  There's little that he could be fooled about or that trickery would blind side him.

Not to mention: when Newt resigned in the late 1990s, at the peak of the party's success, it was left in the hands of Dennis Hastert, who started the party on a downward spiral from which it still has not recovered.
