Juno hits Jupiter's orbit tonight at 8:18 PDT. Here's how to watch this once in a lifetime event from your computer.

I'll be there in total awe and with popcorn.

Inside the orbit of Europa (Don't ever go there) and up over 44,000 MPH some 385,000 miles to go.

I hear it will have an extremely irregular orbit, on purpose.

Yeah. Its going to be making some very close passes around the planet so its going to be hauling ass at closest approaches than heading out for the next pass.

During its closest pass tonight it will be moving at over 100,000 miles per hour.

probably designed this way to minimize exposure to the heaviest radiation, plus gives them a lot of different angles to study things

Gittin with it now.

Distance is down to 200,000 miles from jupiter. Speed is up to 58,000 mph and increasing by more than 1 mph per second

@Cripplecreek  @geronl  did you see there are three Lego figurines on the Juno craft? How neat is this?

This story had the best pictures. Enjoy- everyone.

It will be a few days before there are any pics. Apparently they can't send them while the craft is in the dense radiation field around the planet.

Craft is currently 136,000 miles from the planet traveling 67,000 mph

They didn't include a very good camera, the camera was an afterthought apparently. To get Hubble-quality images it'd have to be within 30K kilometers of Jupiter. It's not going to get any good images of the moons either. The original idea was that it would be used to get a "deep view" of Jupiter.

Some of the instruments on JUNO are expected to last as little as eight orbits because of the radiation,

After the first pass, entering orbit the first full loop will last something like 53 days. It will pass and go way way way out the far side before coming back.

It is expected to last 37 orbits, of course the first orbits will last a very long time
