Court lifts gag order in Twin Peaks biker shootout case

The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals Wednesday overturned a gag order issued by McLennan County state District Judge Matt Johnson that prevented those involved in the Twin Peaks biker shootout case from discussing it.

The high court actually agreed with a lower court that Johnson’s order should not stand.

The shootout between rival biker gangs and police in May 2015 left nine people dead and 18 injured.

The order was issued in the case of Matthew Clendennen, but defense attorneys and the McLennan County district attorney’s office largely applied it to all cases. Clendennen is charged with engaging in organized criminal activity.

Clendennen’s attorney, Clint Broden, said Wednesday that the gag order came  at the behest of the district attorney’s office after his client spoke publicly after the district attorney’s office repeatedly held news conferences about “biker gangs.”
