Newt: Trump might ride into convention on an elephant

By Louis Nelson

06/06/16 05:26 PM EDT

The elephant has long been the mascot of the Republican Party, but former House speaker Newt Gingrich says Donald Trump could take the GOP’s affection for the animal to new heights.

“He is a great showman," Gingrich told the Christian Broadcasting Network’s David Brody. "We have no idea what a Donald Trump convention will be like. I would not be shocked to see him ride in on Thursday night on an elephant. Who knows!?”

Gingrich, who has been critical of Trump’s attacks against U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel over his Mexican heritage, said the Republican nominee must pivot to a campaign that will unite the GOP behind him. The former speaker highlighted the recent disappointing May jobs report and Hillary Clinton’s record as secretary of state as major issues Trump could ride to the White House.

America needs no words from me to see how your decision in Roe v. Wade has deformed a great nation. The so-called right to abortion has pitted mothers against their children and women against men. Human rights are not a privilege conferred by government. They are every human being's entitlement by virtue of his humanity. The right to life does not depend, and must not be declared to be contingent, on the pleasure of anyone else, not even a parent or a sovereign. -Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta

Rumor has it he's been working on that, but there was some sort of accident in the laboratory.

P.T. Barnum was in his day one of the most reviled (and widely followed) showmen.  He would exhibit anything for a buck, and did.

He was also a very effective & successful, populist politician.  Barnum jumped on the Abolishonist movement in New England early on, and rode a very popular anti-slavery campaign into 2 terms in the Connecticut Legislature followed by 2 terms as US Congressman in the House from Connecticut.

If you do a bit of digging on Barnum's career, the parallels with the Trumpster are surprising...Barnum just didn't live long enough to run for President....
