Trump claims Trump University judge has 'absolute conflict'

Donald Trump said Friday that the federal judge presiding over a lawsuit brought by former Trump University students has an "absolute conflict" in handling the case because he is "of Mexican heritage."

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee told The Wall Street Journal that U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel has "an inherent conflict of interest" because Trump is "building a wall," a reference to Trump's proposal to build a wall along the border between the U.S. and Mexico.

Trump University is the target of two lawsuits in San Diego and one in New York that accuse the business of fleecing students with unfulfilled promises to teach secrets of success in real estate. Trump has maintained that customers were overwhelmingly satisfied with the offerings.

Trump has brought up Curiel's ethnicity several times this year, including last week at a rally in San Diego. Curiel was born in Indiana and served as a federal prosecutor and a judge in the California state judicial system before being nominated to the federal bench by President Barack Obama in 2011.

On Wednesday, Curiel ordered some records that were released in the class action lawsuit against Trump University be yanked from public view. Late Tuesday, Curiel ordered some released documents to be resealed and resubmitted with sections blacked-out. He said some records had "mistakenly" been released last week, when he ordered some documents made public.

Lorella Praeli, director of Latino outreach for Democrat Hillary Clinton's campaign, said Friday that Curiel and his family "epitomize the American dream."

"The fact that Donald Trump doesn't see Judge Curiel and his family as Americans makes him unfit to be president of this great nation, a nation of immigrants," Praeli said in a statement.

Oh, it's even worse: the law firm that represents the plaintiffs has donated over $650,000 to the Clinton Foundation. Does the phrase conflict of interest apply here?

Lyin' Don's law degree from the now defunct Trump law school gives his claims real gravitas. Do I really need a sarcasm tag? :silly:

That's why I never became a judge. Being of German, English, Scottish, Dutch and Irish heritage I'd be obliged to recuse myself from nearly every case.

Not because the judge is anti-American, or an illegal alien, or opposed to a wall?????

It is logically unsustainable for Trump simultaneously to maintain that Hispanics love him, and that Mexican heritage is a source of bias against him.

The release of records, a fit of hostility by the judge, shows his incompetence and bias. Trump got him to do something stupid, which wasn't very hard.

Worse, in the light of day, the case looks comical--the original plaintiff dropped out and most everyone wrote and videotaped testimonials supporting the programs. The cases should have been dismissed.

Further, the judge HAS conflict, demonstrates his bias, and has history and association that disqualifies him from this case and from the bench. He is a member of La Raza, yes one of their legal groups, but still, a racist organization. Would his supporters accept a judge who is member of a White-support group? He helped give scholarships to illegal aliens, which is or should be illegal, and in any case, undermines the spirit of the law. His legal group promotes racisim and supports the interests of illegal aliens, which challenges the very laws his is sworn to uphold. No one not of The Race can expect justice in his court. He needs to go.
