Sen. Ben Sasse to Pastors: Our Rights Come From God, Not Government

(CNSNews.com) – Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) told hundreds of pastors gathered for a retreat on Thursday in Washington, D.C., that our rights do not come from the government but are God-given.

“God gives us rights via nature, and government is just our shared tool to secure those rights,” Sasse said at the Family Research Council’s 2016 Watchmen on the Wall retreat in Washington, D.C.

“Government is not the author or source of our rights,” said Sasse, whose speech was billed as “A Message From the U.S. Senate.”

Sasse told the pastors that the Founding Fathers wanted to create a society based on God-given rights, not those bestowed upon the people by a king.

“The American founders said, ‘Whoa, that’s wrong,’” Sasse said. “That doesn’t comport with the dignity of people as they were created.

“Our founders said all people – all men and women -- are created with natural rights,” he said. “God gives us rights via nature, and government is just our shared tool to secure those rights.

“Government is not the author or source of our rights,” Sasse said. “That’s a big, bold, hubristic claim.

“And they were right, and we’ve forgotten to teach it to our kids,” Sasse said.

Sasse also spoke about the importance of his Christian faith. He said that he and his wife home school their three children and that, alternately, one of those three children come with him weekly to Washington, D.C., when Congress is in session.

He is simply stating what our founding documents say - before liberal revisionist  history became the "history" of America. :patriot:

Not sure "we" are teaching children anything about history and civics anymore. Sen. Sasse is absolutely correct.

Schools aren't "teaching" anything except indoctrination to ideas that demean America. :raise hand:

Yes he is correct.  We have been short changing our younger generation with a false perception that government is their provider.  We makes law to give people rights based on what kind of sex they prefer.  Laws to make sure companies hire a certain amount of this race or that.  If we have God given rights we don't need the government to approve or manipulate the population to social engineer society.
