Cyber firm links North Korea to online bank hacks
« on: May 27, 2016, 04:25:49 pm »
A cybersecurity firm said that North Korea could be behind a string of attacks on banks in Asia in what may be the first known case of a country using cyberattacks for financial gain.

Symantec Corp. said in a blog post Thursday that the same group that stole millions from Bangladesh's central bank in February and tried to steal from a bank in Vietnam in December was responsible for another cybersecurity attack on a bank in the Philippines last October.

The firm said an online global banking system has been under sustained attack and that the malware used in the bank attacks was similar to that used on the hacking attack on Sony Pictures in December 2014, which the U.S. blamed on North Korea and the hacking group Lazarus.

“If you believe North Korea was behind those attacks, then the bank attacks were also the work of North Korea,” Symantec security researcher Eric Chien told The New York Times.
