Gallup: Republicans Pay Closer Attention to Election Than Democrats

Republicans are paying closer attention than Democrats to the race for the White House, a new poll shows.
The Gallup survey released Monday found that 47 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents say they're following election news "very closely," compared with 39 percent of Democrats and Democratic leaning independents — a pattern the pollster says has been evident all year.
According to Gallup, an analysis last month noted men were more likely — by 13 points — than women to pay close attention to the presidential contest, but in the latest survey, that gender gap has narrowed to just 6 points.
The poll also finds:
40 percent of voters are following election news very closely, up from 31 percent in January.
79 percent follow election news very or somewhat closely, compared with 69 percent in January.
21 percent do not follow the news too closely, or at all.
The survey's margin of error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.
"Whether the Democrats can generate more interest from their constituency and hence increase the probability of higher voter turnout is one of their central challenges moving toward November," Gallup's Frank Newport writes.
