The 30 Most Dangerous Cities in America — 2016

A Gallup poll indicates that the majority of U.S. citizens think crime is increasing, yet as a whole the nation’s crime rate has declined significantly over the last several years. In fact, both the rates of violent crime and property crime have decreased by more than 40 percent since 1995.

Comparing the most recent FBI Crime Report data to the previous year’s data, we found crime continued to fall — specifically, the number of reported crimes dropped by nearly four percent from 2013 to 2014. Among crimes highlighted in the FBI report, robberies and burglaries decreased the most over this period. Regionally, robberies declined most in the Northeast at 11.1 percent, followed by the Midwest at 8.8 percent, the West at 5.8 percent, and the South at 1 percent. Burglaries decreased substantially as well, dropping by 13.8 percent in the Midwest, 13.1 percent in the Northeast, 10.7 percent in the West, and 8.2 percent in the South. All in all, the Northeast enjoyed the biggest down-turn in crime, and the South experienced the smallest drop.

Some of these towns are very small; a town needs to have at least 10,000 inhabitants and not all places submitted FBI reports. And some towns were not even in the previous top 30 so they could have had just a bad year.

Violent Crimes and Property Crimes make up this number. A few surprises on the list.

Violent Crimes is, of course, the more worse barometer though you don't want to have routine property crimes occurring.

An awful lot of southern cities on that list. And no Chicago.

Almost all small to medium in size.

Ranking is for violent and property crimes, per 1,000 residents.

Many very large cities have significant low crime areas, with only a fraction of the city very high crime.

In other examples like Salt Lake City; which is only a small incorporated entity, compared to the entire sprawling metro area. SLC includes mainly the old inner city. Low income. High crime.

The ranking is by property crimes, NOT violent crimes.

I.E. where you will get your car stolen, NOT where you will get mugged or murdered.

Another thing, they really should say something like "dangerous towns". I've seen lists of safe cities and they have to have, I think usually, 50,000, 200,000 inhabitants or something to even make the list.

These towns above, many are pretty small.

Here is a ranking per the compilers interpretation of FBI stats of the most dangerous cities for 2015. Curiously, Chicago isn't on this list either though, one might think some of these other cities should be listed.

Those top ten cities have one thing in common, but it shall not be spoken.

Those lists are all over the place and can say different things.

I once saw a list and Kalamazoo was a dangerous place and over at the TOS; I think posters who knew agreed.

Also, for Cities, El Paso is seemingly always up on the list for "safe cities"; but I'm not sure I saw them at the list at that law street website I just posted.

As I said, there can be a lot of variances on these lists.

That list is very suspect. Some of those areas are small indeed and I wouldn't hesitate to go into most of these towns where as I stay out of all big cities anymore no reason to go into them. Never have I been the least bit scared to be in Springfield or Branson Mo.

I can understand Tukwila situated as it is in the middle of the Meth capital of the US.  When I was a claims adjuster we'd have Class C RVs stolen all the time to be turned into rolling meth labs.  The tweekers need to commit property crimes to afford the meth.
